I have, it’s not great. Maltsmiths is a brand concocted by Heineken to pretend it’s some small craft brewery. My Untappd tasting notes recall that it “poured flat as a pancake, watery with a hint of malt and hop. £6.80 not well spent” (it was ridiculously overpriced at the bar in London City Airport).

Given the amazing beers being produced weekly by small breweries in the U.K., if you want a good strong IPA you have so many better options than this rubbish.

Tried this last night, it was surprisingly good, a nice crisp lager with hoppy after taste.

I saw on their website that Heineken own them out of Edinburgh. Big brewery ownership is not always the kiss of death, I really rate Hophouse 13 from Guiness.

Agree on IPA's though, we are spoilt for choice

Meantime have gone downhill since being taken over.

    Beavertown have done the same.

The jury’s out on Fourpure and Camden.

Heineken are awful. Just Google “Heineken + fine” and see what comes up.

Well, took a walk down the hill for a last swally until Christmas is done. Had some lovely Prince Bishop Ale, not for the faint hearted quaffer at 4.9%. Of course the bar was heaving with the traditional Sunday scran, some lovely cheeses and mega hot roast tatties, then Peter returned with his second lot from the oven, hot mince pies and other stuff, all top notch. Only 4 ales on mind, not the usual 5, ;-)

What's with these jamjars they are serving beer in now? Had some Camden IPA the other day and the first came in a tall pint glass then the next ones in one of these!!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I recently discovered this lovely lager, it is unique in a good way with a nice malt flavour.

Just drinking a glass of this right now. I like it and don't care who brews it. Not too strong, hint of hoppy malt and very refreshing.

However, the first of the evening was on offer from Mr J Sainsbury's …

Not too bad. Subtle floral notes, nice clean taste, not over hoppy, but nothing amazing. For the price, more than acceptable.

I've been enjoying Beavertown Neck Oil recently

    Now that's a nice drop, but £2 a 330ml can. You can buy 4 for £7 though.

I used to think that, until I heard about how awful they are as an employer in Africa and how their business practices have been fined all over the place. Seriously, Google “Heineken fined” and you’ll read a litany of questionable activities, or “Heineken promotion girls”.

I personally try very hard now not to consume anything from the global “big beer” producers, or any breweries they own stakes in. Granted, it’s hard to avoid in some countries, but I can’t support companies that behave like they have when there are so many excellent smaller breweries to celebrate, especially in the uk

A cheeky pint of Theakston XB in the Witchwood in Ashton under Lyne. I’ve not been here for 20+ years....it’s not changed much!

No 'photos however I've just started with Wonder Beyond Brewing's Berliner Weisse "Curious Creek", a light starter for what could be a heavy afternoon into evening session...

Plenty of ales to choose from where I'm sat -https://www.the-ale-house-chelmsford.co.uk/

    Today’s line-up...

I’ve just started using the Bierkeller app which you log all the beers you’ve got in the cellar (shed/cupboard/fridge) on, telling it how many, when they were bottled/canned and when they expire.

It helpfully tells you what’s going out of date, and how soon, so you know what to pick and what not to let go off. Nice

So today it mysteriously nudged me to select these three, a common thread in the labelling as you can see. I shall be working my way from left to right!

Cheers, and I did There's something for everyone at the Ale House, it never fails when it comes to choice.

I picked up these 4 earlier today, I do enjoy a stout however it's not something that I indulge in too often. After trying a wonderful peanut butter stout last night I thought I'd get a few more in for the festivities, so here we have 4 different variations on the theme.

From L to R Cloudwater's Xmas pudding imperial, Boundary Brewing's coffee imperial, SALT/Queer Brewing Project's toffee, cacao and honeycomb imperial and Pressure Drop/Zapato's passion fruit dry stout.

    Stout

Sounds like my kind of session establishment, CardShark.

Good haul there, all new to me. I have recently restocked with Stouts too, it’s the season after all. Will post here as I work my way through them. Some pretty hefty ones out there for sure.

Last night started in my local pub with a friend and former colleague drinking Butty Bach.

After a superb meal it was back to mine and out came the tequila - Casamigos Anejo.

This morning was a little slow and the day didn't really pick up pace! We managed to polish off a bottle and a half!! I don't think I've drunk that much since 31/12/1999 and I doubt I ever will again.

Tried and enjoyed one (well, a couple) of those recently and the barman asked me if I wanted a slice of orange in it? Didn't like to refuse, and the addition actually went down quite well!

Having driven his wife and bairns to the in-laws, cooked a turkey lunch, and not had a drink all day, your correspondent upon his return immediately attended to his rather pressing thirst . . .

Well, as it is lunch time I thought I would give this a try:

I'm not usually a fan of stout as I often find them too smokey but this is good if a tad short on flavour. I will add the reservation that it has been kept outside so perhaps it is too cold. I'll bring the next one in to warm up and see if that improves the flavour.

    Well this was rather disappointing
I thought I would try something different, no head, little flavour and the most anaemic colour of any German lager I have ever tried
Back to British beer I think!

For Christmas my parents gave me a selection of beers from a local brewery. It is a one man band (and his very understanding girlfriend according to my Mum). The French aren't renknowned for their beers so it is good to see that the craft beer craze as reached their shores. Here is the first one:

It is more ale than a larger despite although it is quite fizzy. Very tasty, if a tad sweet. Nice and hoppy with a slight hint of champagne. I am looking forward to trying the others.
