I was about in the city today and called in the Vic to fortify myself with some Raven. The tradition is that on Sundays regulars take food in to put on the bar to share and there was some local black cheese today, a good match for the Raven being supped by a Magpie . . .

This was delicious. Gifted to me by a colleague at work who’s an investor at Left Handed Giant brewery. Really smooth, both fruits present and balanced so neither dominates and drowns the other. Sweet and tart but not too sour.

This is one I brought back from my recent Cornish holiday. Caramel on the nose, smooth, sweet, gentle spritz on the tongue and a lingering dry bitterness on the finish. Nice classic IPA style.

The Vic in Durham. Shame to be in the Toon outside of opening hours. :-(

Friday night, quick pint in the pub followed by the last in the Northern Powerhouse 2019 box...

The latter was quite a thing. A slow, sipping drink that went brilliantly with chocolates.

And yesterday, I went up Norf (Lundan) to Islington where I had a few ales with some mates before heading to the DMC World DJ Championships. Decided to keep it no/low ABV for the afternoon & early evening as I had work to do today.

If you like a good Milk Stout, have you tried Wiper & True Milkshake, Founders KBS or Wild Beer Co Millionaire Milk Stout?

Definitely a make lemonade out of being dealt lemons situation

I only had two of them last night, I was too tired to enjoy any more. First was the passion fruit lassi (only my second ever lassi, the first was Neon Raptor's gorgeous Passing Piranhas bramble berry lassi gose) and it made for a fine starter, could have maybe upped the passion fruit by a smidge however it was otherwise extremely well balanced without being in any way sickly sweet. NR's Halo Effect DIPA was second, and it won't be my last. It's described by the brewery as being hazy, soft, juicy and fruity however I'd add a more than a hint, and extremely pleasant, dose of pine in there as well. It was, IMO, superb.

Not sure whether I`ve recommended it before, but Lidl do a nice bottled beer called 'Green Gecko', a slightly spicy IPA-type beer in the same vein as some of the trendy craft beers. It's 5.0%, and at £1.19 for a half litre bottle it's damned good value. Only problem is that it's too nice, once you've had one you definitely want another........and another!

Well worth a try if you're a beer fan.

    Three newbies this week...

A tasty an unusual Saison brewed with Gorse flowers giving a fruity, coconut hint to Ophelia from Yonder Brewing & Blending during a midweek pitstop at The Rake in Borough Market...

A new brewery and new beer from One Mile End l, gifted to me by a pal to try. Tangy, bitter and dry.

And a no alc beer to have with the rugby yesterday morning. Brutal Brewing’s Ship Full of IPA was really rather good, and with no downside!

I went to Lidl because of this, I forgot how cheap and decent the food is there. Anyway, I think this was 99p and it’s quite nice!

Of course a big part of going to pubs is to meet folks and have some banter, but you can't beat the early doors ambience of a just opened hostelry, all to yourself . . .

The Victoria, in Durham. That bar was full today and the bar was covered in food brought in by the locals, a nice Sunday tradition.

Having a well deserved day off work sees myself and Mrs Sish in Knaresbrough. Found a fine selection of Samuel Smith's beers in The Wine Shop, including this limited edition Winter Welcome. Also picked up a quartet of Organic Chocolate Stout for the dark winter nights ahead.
