Stayed in Budrio a few km east of Bologna about 15 years ago.
We travelled into Bologna and several other cities in the region.
I’m afraid I can’t remember the names of the places we ate, but the food was superb wherever we went.

Thinking of a visit to celebrate Mrs Goats birthday in February as a friend recommended it as a nice city, a slightly less obvious choice..
So, anyone been, got any tips?
Thanks in advance

It's a lovely city, not too big, nice people and a very pretty historical centre. It's a long time since we went so I don't remember any particular places to eat, but anything with pasta was especially good (just don't ask for spaghetti bolognese!).
And it's the home of Maserati if that appeals :).
When I met my wife she was living in Bologna so I've spent quite a bit o time there. It has all the charm of a city like Florence with about 1% of the tourists.
For a long weekend break I can't recommend it enough.
Ferrara is also worth a look (not too far from Bologna). Stayed there a couple of years ago.

I stayed in Modena with my son ,it's about 15 to 20 minutes on the train from bologna. We were a trip to visit all the super car action in the area. Bologna was a great place .Easy to get around and lots to see and the food was amazing. There is a guy we used to give us a tour round Lamborghini ,Pagini and the Ferrari museum it's brilliant if your in to that kind of thing.. The Enzo Ferrari museum in Modena that's worth a look as well.
My favourite Italian city and it tops a long list. Great food, fascinating history and with 40 kms of porticos an ideal winter destination. My only tips are a city centre hotel and comfortable shoes, Bologna will do the rest.
It is a great base for day trips too as the hub of the northern Italian rail network. Before the Brexit madness the wife and i had planned to spend the first part of our retirement based there, so I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't enjoy a few days
I'm doing a short bike tour in April. Staying in Rimini for 5 nights and plan on a day trip to Bologna. My wife bought this recently which will pack into her pannier.

We were there in 2014. I can't seem to find my notes yet but I'll update the thread as and when I find them (or A does).
The one good recommendation I would have is the hotel we stayed in on the 2nd leg of the trip (we had a bit either side of a conference that SWMBO attended nearer the coast).

I realise that ice cream in Italy is a thing apart from most of our home-grown varieties but the Gelateria Gianni next to the Two Towers was a very regular haunt. I daresay there are better given that it overlooks one of the main tourist points of interest in town but it's difficult to pass if you're in town.

Accŕ Vineria - via S. Giorgio, 11/e
This was the best wine bar that we found. Good for natural wines. Wine bar food available and good.

Antica DrogheriaCalzolari - 9, Via G. Petroni
This is a wine shop in an old pharmacy that also serves wine. Standup only and limited space; the best time to visit is between 11 and midday when the local old bachelors come in for their morning stiffener.

Berberč Bologna - Via Petroni 9c
Modern Italian restaurant and pizzeria.

Osteria dell’Orsa - Via Mentana, 1
Basically an Italian greasy spoon and very competently done. Definitely a get in, eat and get out sort of place and not the worse for it. Not sure it's suitable for a special weekend but it depends how much time you've got and it might also work for lunch.

Caffe Rubik (Bar Tabaccheria over the door) - Via Marsala 31
A great place for an aperitif (it's just around the corner from the dell'Orsa above). Probably a bit dull (or rather just a standard coffee bar) during the day but around after 6 gets quite busy with everybody spilling out into the street.
Le Stanze - Via del Borgo di San Pietro 1,
A very pleasant cocktail bar in a stunning location; a former private chapel of local nobility.

In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
If you are even vaguely interested in motorbikes, the Ducati museum is worth a visit :

Nothing to do with the Ducati factory there as a sightseeing diversion? Nicely done..GOAT i like your thinking & style .
i was once driven round Sarronno in Lombardia region outside Milano by a friend, a gorgeous 20 something called Allessandra from Bologna....
she noticed my foot buried in the footwell & asked was i nervous? Of course i replied...you're blonde, you're female & you're driving me round Italy...I'm bloody terrified!..
she didn't stop laughing till we got to the ristorante!
