I only have to hear those discordant opening notes to Jimi's Purple Haze to know that sonic nirvana is upon me.

Someone voted for Ida Gadda Vida previously - great shout!
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Probably polar opposite of regular rock intros but I like Danny Elfmans Batman(1989) intro the build up .

Liquids Sweet Harmony build up is good before the drop .

    Fortunate Son: CCR

    Sex Machine: JB

    Low Rider: War

    Sharp Dressed Man: ZZ Top

On The Road Again: Canned Heat

The first forty-two seconds of ZZ Top's Rough Boy.

The first thirty-four seconds of Cado Belle's I Name This Ship Survival.

(Cado Belle do like a good intro: several of their songs have really good beginnings...)

I haven't listened to any ZZ Top for years...might have to sit down and do so.

I could follow suit and name about 70 different tracks in one thread, but that's frankly boring as f*ck. The first to spring to mind is "love will tear us apart" by joy division.

It isn't technically great and it doesn't scream "classic" but it's iconic to me.

Smoke on the Water is surely the most instantly recognisable into ever, only equalled by Whole Lotta Love.

I think this thread deserves a bump.

Already had a playlist on my iTunes with my favourite intro based songs, many of them mentioned here, and now further enhanced with many of the other great suggestions so far.

I don't think these two have been mentioned yet...

    Muddy Waters - Mannish Boy

Kiss - God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II

Lots of good suggestions. My favourites are:

The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet (the Blink 182 cover is also brilliant)

    Faithless - Insomnia

Stone Roses - I am the resurrection

Would it be wrong to admit that I have it as a dedicated ring tone for when the Mrs calls me - seemed appropriate.
