For me, this has to be the best intro with a drum featuring heavily, equally the best drum finish to a song ever. Hell, it's just a song full of pure energy!!

Can't remember if it has been mentioned (or even if I have mentioned it), but Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Up Around The Bend' has an instantly recognisable and striking intro.

Brilliant, thank you - had forgotten all about Carter. Had a 5.30am leave for the office this morning and had both played far too loudly heading through the country lanes. ESP surfing USM, ah the memories!
Was too young to have seen them live, but looked amazing.

Gimme shelter - The Rolling Stones
Cochise by Audioslave, not only for the intro but what a way to open an album!
White Room - Cream
The whole first minute of Deep Purple - Highway Star (1997 Remix). I can't think of a finer example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, or a recording that gives a finer impression of a band working in harmony.
First couple of minutes of Slayer Hell Awaits has to be some of the best heavy music ever, but undecided between the somewhat under produced album version or the live one from the decade of aggression album. Then of course there's good old raining blood.
Gimme shelter is a good shout, but for me, I prefer the heavier dirtier version by the Hellacopters
I’d go with Arabella - Arctic Monkeys. Only 20 seconds..can that count?
Radiohead - High and Dry
I don't know why, but I think this is perfect. I could play it over and over and it just fizzes in my head. The first 28 seconds until the vocal comes in.
Like art, I don't understand my longing for it. Somewhere in my midbrain the connections appreciate it.
Dakota - Stereophonics
If I was in a rock band, and I wrote one intro, I would happily stop after writing this and hang up my recording studio door pass.
Rest of the song isn't too shabby.
And.......
Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 in B Flat "Gran Partita" (K361) - YES, Mozart. Go and youtube it.
- " On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse, bassoons and basset horns, like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly; high above it, an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I’d never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing. It seemed to me that I was hearing the very voice of God. "
Yes, Mozart. He was there first.
Gimme Shelter and She Sells Sanctuary are good intros, but for me, Rasputin by Boney M is the best. Changes direction a few times before the verse kicks in.

This one is very evocative. To quote Dennis from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia “Because of the implication.....” https://youtu.be/X_DVS_303kQ In seriousness, how can you ever dissociate this song from ‘That Scene’?

When I was a student I had a small flat and a very good stereo, with oversized speakers for the size of the 32sqm flat. But the flat was mine, my first property bought with my wages as a freelance journalist and a favourable mortgage.
The same flat, one floor below, was an old boy who made a point of starting his very early shift noisily (4 AM)
One day I came down and asked him to be more considerate , just as I was. I was told to do one in not so many words.
The rest of the week, from 21:30 to 22:00 (France’s night time official start for noise related issues) I turned the speakers face down (it was something like 2x 100w!) and cut the treble, maximised the bass and played fool’s overture over and over.
After a couple of days or three, he came up to apologise, and we signed a peace treaty.

For pure, ragged, punk energy the intro - with backward drums - of Another Girl, Another Planet. Just looked up details of the recording and interestingly the finished track is based on the demo, because that kind of magic only happens the once....
In about 1992, shortly after I'd bought my first CD player (I already had the 39-minute version of Blue Room by the Orb and just needed something to play it on) I was up at the unearthly hour of 8am or so to go to the dentist. I tiptoed out over my three friends who'd stayed the night and been up really late making a load of noise. Came back around 11 and they were all still asleep. I tiptoed back over them to the CD player, put on 'Time' by Pink Floyd and whacked the volume on full as the chimes kick in. I'm sure they all levitated they were off the floor so fast.
Honourable mention to 'Layla', 'You Really Got Me', 'In The Air Tonight' (eventually) and I'm sure loads more I'll think of later.
