What's the best thing you have bought/been given in 2017?

I imagine a lot of watches will pop up on this thread.

Mine would be a hand-made Chef's knife I picked up in Osaka from Tower knives back in Feb.

TOWER KNIVES OSAKA - タワーナイブズ大阪 - 新世界の包丁専門店
Address: 1 Chome-4-7 Ebisuhigashi, Naniwa Ward, Osaka, Osaka Prefecture 556-0002, Japan

Will post a picture up later when home.

Every year I buy multiple cars (I have a problem.... similar to my addiction to watches)... this years most exciting purchase (but not the most costly, if that's what your asking) is a MK1 Golf GTI

Apple AirPod headphones, bought on a whim but i'm really impressed with them! makes a change as technology often disappoints - certainly apple stuff.

Forum regulars will know what the best thing we've been given this year is. I think that the best things we've bought have been a couple of trips to Lake Titicaca, which were both just amazing.

For me, best non-watch purchases this year: Jura E8 & Golf R Estate. Oh, and I have a Charnwood C4. Didn’t realise they were held in such high regard!

I was going to say my Golf R, but actually it was our holiday to Jordan.

Wasn't cheap (although possibly less than some here spend on a weekend break! ), but probably one of the top 3 trips we've ever done!

The ex-demo Canon 7D I bought in the summer. it's at least five years old but had fewer than 1000 shots on it and still smells like new.
Also the ticket to the Aviva final at Twickenham last May.

A 2002 Gibson Les Paul Studio. It was a case of it finding me rather than me finding it. I had been pining after a Standard but a house build this year means the guitar/watch fund is at an all time low. Then the Studio popped up and an incredibly good price and I just couldn't resist. It had sat in a case for the best part of 15 years and was virtually unplayed. It's cherry with gold hardware, a combo I would have never chosen but absolutely love now. It plays and sounds like a dream.

First in a two part present: seeking Alfred Russel Wallace. Taking a trip to Halmahera and hiking into the forest to see Wallace's Standardwing bird-of-paradise, Tarsiers in Tangkoko and then diving in Lembeh with Bobbit Worms (where they filmed Blue Planet II). Second part will be 2019's trip to follow Darwin. You can take the boy out of zoology, but you can't take the zoology out of the boy. Probably.

A Steinway Model B piano. I am not rich by any measure and this purchase took a fair bit of saving, a generous inheritance and a little bit of borrowing. However it is fantastic and I have aspired to own one since I first played this instrument at 16.

Love to hear more about this story. Did you play a few before deciding, where did you get it, how does it sound compared with your old upright, how did you get it into the house etc.

I'll post more information and a picture when I am less mobile. Just to note that I previously had a Bechstein Model B grand which you can find details of elsewhere on the forum (and see bring played on my YouTube channel).

Two things. Not 'materials'. Two things that make me (us my wife and myself) so proud:

    • My oldest son's 2nd place on the Dutch Nationals sailing and his 5th place on the World Championship - and we know how much he sacrifices for that.
    • My youngest (Asperger) re-inventing himself: starting 'to look beyond himself': trying to find friends, realising that he's not going to live with us forever, figuring out what he wants to do with his life / study at the uni: astronomy. Another thing we're proud of!

Two things for me this year.

Wood burning stove, I feel a bit like an old man saying that as it is not exactly a "cool" purchase but I absolutely love it!

and my little MG Midget for the fun factor

That’s going to take some beating as a memorable purchase.

Here is a not so good photo.

This is a Hamburg Steinway 1925 Model B fully rebuilt using S&S parts and including a brand new Hamburg Steinway action. I did shop around - a new one (at circa 90K) was out of my budget therefore I explored the second hand market. The decision was to either buy one to have rebuilt myself either privately or at an auction, or to buy one that had already been rebuilt such as this from a dealer with the warranty. I ended up going the latter route because of the variable quality of rebuilt instruments and the gamble of how this might turn out. In the end I found this instrument which plays and sounds superbly and is comparable to a brand new S&S. This is partly because of the quality of the instrument and partly because it had been finished and prepared by one of the UK's top Steinway technicians. I plan to make some recordings early new year which I'll share.

17 year old MGF. In great condition but does have a few maintenance jobs that need doing so it’s a mini-project, a fun convertible and hopefully a future classic - all in one.

    Agree, so easy to control.

Probably too large for the room, but loved the amount of window it had vs some smaller stoves. Use it most nights, already got through 1m3 of logs since Sept

As near mint as could be 1999 Honda Fireblade.

Tame by modern standards but ideal for the ageing biker.
