Went to see it on Saturday and have left it until today to let it sink in before commenting. Obviously just my opinion, but here goes...

    **** SPOILERS ******

    I REPEAT:

    **** SPOILERS ******

I actually didn't mind most of the humour, although I didn't like the turning of Hux into a parody of himself. The lightsaber chuck and Poe's crank call made me chuckle.
I hated (with a passion) the Leia Poppins moment, the CGI on her gown looked dreadful to my eyes, worse than Neo in the Matrix films. I was looking forward to her performance after all the press junket talk of of it being fantastic, but to be honest it wasn't anything special. It left me slight deflated to be honest, as I wanted it to be a fitting tribute.
The Finn/Rose thread was overlong and didn't really add anything (except maybe getting them into the correct place for the third act). But I like the Rose character, the actress was terrific.
I had no idea Ade Edmondson was in it, and yet bizarrely I spotted Gareth Edwards' (Rogue One director) cameo.
I genuinely didn't see the twist coming regarding Luke at the end, I just assumed he was using the Force to avoid/deflect the AT-AT fire.
The very last scene at the stables was a bit naff.
Adam Driver was head and shoulders above the others in terms of performance.
    I didn't mind the porgs.

    And finally...

    ********* STILL SPOILERS HAPPENING *********

How the hell did Snoke, who was nattering on about being able to see into Kylo Ren's soul etc., fail to notice that Ren was manipulating the lightsaber with the Force?

On balance, I though it was a solid but unexceptional SW film. The reviews ranking it up there with Empire are off the mark in my opinion, but it wasn't a bad film. I'm up for a second viewing over Christmas, maybe that'll give me a different perspective on some of the weak areas now I know the plot points.

He didn't have any special powers, the way he turned his brush around to hold as a weapon (light-sabre maybe?) was a reference to a new generation of "The Rebellion" being forged through oppression, and galvanised by the sacrifice Luke Skywalker made.

At least that's my take on it.
The boy used the Force to get the broom into his hand.

Personally, I just think it spends too long setting up a resolution to ..........often nothing.

Like the huge space cannon bought to the surface to punch a hole through..........oh, not really relevant anymore...... etc

Watched this today. Really enjoyed it but agree with a lot reviews in some ways. Didn’t like the leia scene floating back to the ship. Not knowing the origin of the key bad guy was bizzare. Agree the cave thing was stupid. The humour was good, action was good and enjoyed it a lot overall. Bring on the next one!

Leia thing was terrible. Assumed at first she was killed off since poor Carrie passed.

Be a bit dumb if they just mention Leia dead in next film, so presume they have some tricks but prob not!!!

I thought the stupid side story in vegas and horse racing thing was ultra poor and very George Lucas prequel (looked bad CGI wise)

Continuity would be nice also - Yodas Force Ghost for example

I guess Rogue One made me get my hopes up as it was more true to Star Wars in every way

Haha! You know when you kind of miss something but thought you saw it, I was sure that he had used the force to move the broom but the other person I went with didn't notice! Its had me questioning it since, I was certain he had done

As i have unexpectedly got the rest of this week off after today, i'm planning to see it Thurs morning i think. I will slip away from the wife under the pretence of going Christmas shopping, hopefully be nice and quiet with the kids still at school.

Any opinions on whether to see it in 2D or 3D? Only 3D film i've seen before was Avatar and found the glasses a pain over the top of my glasses, so will go 2D unless there is v good reason to go 3D

    Cheers

    Brighty

  12. #112
No point in the 3d in this film at all in my opinion. I was forced to do 3d as I wanted the IMAX experience and both come together at local cinema...
IMAX sound and big screen were with it, but the 3d parts were underwhelming.

Off topic - but kids still at school on Thu 21st? Around here, majority of schools broke up Fri 15th and the ones that didn't break up lunch time tomorrow (20th).

Yup, official term end is 22nd, but that's a teacher training day, so they finish normal time on Thurs, don't go back till the 8th though

Fair enough - they go back on the 3rd round here, so same difference I suppose........though 22nd is still cutting it fine for schools IMHO.

Ok seen it now. Overall I really enjoyed it with the Kylo Ren and Luke characters holding it together. The acting for Ren and Finn was better than in the first one. Agree with some of the plot weirdness and discontinuity but I walked out of the cinema having actually enjoyed it more than Force Awakens. Not as good as Rogue One but a great movie nonethesame and I'll try and seeit again in the new year if I get chance.

Watched it last night. From the reviews expected awesomeness but got adequate. Not a patch on rogue one.

I have to say TLJ (and TFA to a degree) only serve to show how brilliant a film Rogue 1 is in comparison. A British director who’s clearly a Star Wars fan and added a fascinating chapter. Might well go down as the last decent Star Wars movie I fear

Took my two youngest sons (26 and 21) today. I would rank it in the top three or four of the eight episodes. There were some story hitches, as notes above, but overall it was an energetic and well-paced SW. Carrie Fisher was a bit disappointing, but Mark Hamill picked up the slack nicely. Adam Driver, while not much to look at, put in a solid performance. Daisy Ridley was a bit of an enigma: She's quite attractive and did a great acting job, but the costumers ladened her down with frumpy medievel layers to wear instead of something more revealing and inspiring.

While I thought John Boyega as "Finn" was terrible in SW7, I was much more pleased with his measured and layered performance this time around.

All in all, we had great fun at the cinema.

I enjoyed it. It moved along at a good pace. I thought the casino bit was a bit preachy and unnecessary. I watched the Force Awakens the day before and while I enjoyed the Star Wars references the first time, watching it again they just felt laboured.

  22. #122
Watched most of it again last night - enjoyed the bits I enjoyed the first time at least as much, if not more on second viewing. But the Poppins bit still really grated for me. I can forgive the bombers in zero-G bit and am kinda ok with lots of the other bits that I didn't really enjoy first time. It is a good couple of hours escapism and generally enjoyable - but it still doesn't feel as essential as Rogue One or even The Force Awakens.

I agree that Adam Driver is a stand out, but don't think there were any terrible performances - the dialogue and earnestness required delivering it is way below the prequal cheese level...

Well seen it yesterday and as long as you don’t let all the hype get to you and take it tongue in cheek it’s okay, not as good as rogue One in my opinion but okay for a couple of hours watching, i said to my son as we walked out I would have liked to have seen more kids like the young boy at the end discovering the force and speeding through them all awakening to the force

    ***** SPOLIERS *****

I saw this at the weekend and thought it good, although probably the least good of the three Disney ones. I thought the humour was fine and not out of place.

Leia's space walk was a bit silly. I suspect they needed a way of getting her out of the way for the bits they hadn't yet filmed.

Maz Kanata's phone call just seemed forced, I don't know if I had a micro-sleep, but I don't remember her being mentioned, then all of a sudden they were on the phone to her.

Snoke's demise and subsequent fight was one of the better scenes from any of the films.

  25. #125
As popcorn entertainment, it was pretty good IMO. Probably 1/2 hour too long - but that’s pretty much every action blockbuster. Some of the set-pieces were very good, particularly the final one on the salt flats, and it generally looked fantastic.

    ****Spoilers****

I don’t really agree with overanalysing a kids film, but in the context of other StarWars movies...

I agree that the humour was misplaced. I know there has always been jokiness in the SW series, but aside from comic relief, it always took itself seriously. Undermining the bad guys eg Hux, particularly with what was essentially a crank-call, takes you out of the SW universe. Similarly clumsy references to arms dealing and other “real world issues” takes you out of the vibe. I know they are trying to make the films relevant, but it’s meant to be a fantasy with no basis in our world.

Leia’s flying sequence was stupid, even by SW standards.

The plot was essentially a remix of the usual SW tropes, but I didn’t expect it to really be any different. What’s the betting that Kylo redeems himself at the end of the next film?

And they had four dots in the ellipsis in the beginning crawl, which nearly ruined it for me.

Every single ellipsis in every SW film has had 4 dots, apart from the opening crawl in ROTJ which has three. It's been discussed quite a bit, there is such a thing as a four dot ellipsis where the final dot is a full stop, indicating the end of the sentence which has had some words omitted. At least that's how I understand it?

Some people think it was a nod by George Lucas to the opening text of Flash Gordon, which was a major influence on Lucas before he created Star Wars:

Lucas has not said one way or the other but it def isn't just on the latest film.

Although it does have to be suitable for children.
Any sw film has to be made with the original fan base in mind, and they will all be in their late forties /fifties now.

I think the killing off of the original cast like Luke , Han etc was a way of saying let our nostalgia go . We never batted an eyelid when vadar finished Ben kenobi and Luke was the hero. Now in years to come kids will mourn the loss of Rey. There was lots of subliminal messages implied throughout the film about the Jedi dying and letting go etc . These films are aimed at capturing kids imagination which back in the day they did . As they will with our children when they watch the recent offerings . Time for it to move forward .

All the original trilogy fans are stuck in nostalgia land (me included) and Rogue one was the only one that felt right . Anyway it Last Jedi was ok for me like force awakens, nothing more .

I put that as a joke, but it turns out it's been discussed to the nth degree - why am I not surprised? (It's like the old gag about working out "Kirk vs Picard to 2 decimal places").

Feeling your pain mate, I got a “bargain” family of 4 ticket at Glasgow IMAX for a mere £57 for this afternoon. What’s dulling the pain is that all shopping was completed yesterday so no clusterfuck-maggedon shopping centre visits this weekend for me... Looking forward to it.

Saw it Thurs morning in a nice new cinema with big comfy reclining chairs. Being 10.30 am and with kids still at school, it was nice and empty too.

Enjoyed it overall, didn't find the humour out of place. My only complaints are first, Kylo Ren, same as Force awakens, i just do not find him a convincing or menacing baddie, too much "boo hoo, poor me, i don't know whether to be good or bad', he's no Vader for sure. Dark menacing Vader, finding redemption in the end was kind of the whole plot of the first trilogy. If Kylo ends up finding the light at the end of the next episode, it won't have the same impact and i won't much care.

Other thing that i found silly was that star destroyers can't catch up with rebel ships, really? They can match their speed perfectly so they can't get away, but can't close in on them and blast them to Hell?

Saw it last night. Wife and I weren't too sure about it. Kids really enjoyed it. Think that says it all.

Rogue One on the other hand was really good and much truer to the original story-lines.

The way the characters have developed/not developed means you don't really care about them. Kylo Res is no Vader. Vader was menacing and dark, Ren is a boy that's confused and wears a mask for no reason.

Too many silly attempts at humour (though they did make a group near us laugh each time). Too many stretches in terms of CGI etc. - yes I know its a fantasy, but still.

Some nice references to the old stories/original film though.

Will undoubtedly get the dvd when it comes out so maybe it'll grow on me.

Watched it yesterday and liked it a lot.

    ***Spoilers below***

The many comedic elements were welcome but didn’t seem appropriate for General Hux.

The use of force magic by Leia was completely out of character and really a step too far.

Snoke was a real disappointment - no back story and a weak departure. Given this is 30 years after ROTJ where was such a powerful figure in the original universe?

More could have been made of Captain Phasma - I wonder if the glimpse through the mask was a hint at a spin-off?

    Much to long.
    so many plot holes
    muffled dialogue
    To much CGI

You're going to stray into “Kirk vs Picard to 2 decimal places” territory if you’re not careful!

The bombers were a very clumsy plot device, like the “just out of range” chase, limited fuel for one last jump, and kamikaze run at the end - plus all the the other rather glaring weaknesses in otherwise apparently very advanced technology and immeasurably powerful weaponry.

Star Wars is (very) soft sci-fi, and the plots falls apart very quickly. In fact, in a space battle, you probably wouldn’t even fight with multiple, manned small craft, dogfight-style.

As I said, it’s a kids film. People take it far too seriously.

What would have made Leia's flight scene much better would have been Luke projecting the force to save her (when feeling she was in trouble) they could have shown the effort it caused him and then that would have tied together with the final projection and his death by that effort. I guess they wanted to surprise at the end when the AT-AT's pulverized him and he is unmarked, but it would certainly have added up much better than what we got.

What I cannot forgive is killing off Admiral Akbar without him even getting the scene shown.

The slow motion chase was straight out of Battlestar Gallactica or Star Wars. Not called for here.

The codebreaker subplot and jumping to the casino was far-fetched.

Snoke got killed off far too easily.

My son and I have just seen it. Occasionally a bit slow in places, but very impressed overall. Shame I can’t afford my own cinema. At one point, someone’s grandma next to my son was snoring after 10 mins, ( why bring her?)
Some great and interesting plot going on!

Which is what I said to my son. To which he responded with - "why not use rockets". Fair point I thought.

Plus if they did have their own gravitation pull, then surely the bomber would not have to be over it, under it would have worked just as well.

One glaring scene that I thought was cheesy, after the rebel cruiser rams snopes ship ( or whater his name was) nearly all the thousands of troopers are dead, but miraculously, Finn and Rea, are unscathed!
