    Owning a Heuer Monaco

    Morning all

Another milestone in my life and another watch purchase to celebrate.

I used to be a Rolex guy but have came to the conclusion I want to collect a few brands. My end game is to have a Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Panerai, Heuer and a Patek (bit of a long term goal)

Been researching a while and have been drawn to the Tag Monaco model in the picture below

RRP is £4650 but I can get one BNIB for about £3000

Just wondering if anyone has any experiences with a small wrist (6.75 inches)

Other options are Tudor pelagos LHD at RRP or picking up a second hand ETA black bay on here

    Thanks all

I like the Monaco. Lovely watch, and that's one of the better ones too. No silly Calibre text on the dial.

You will need to try one on as with a large flat back they might not be the comfiest watch on some wrists.
It's just a matter of time...

Oh those hideous flat pushers. WHY? They completely ruin what is otherwise a pretty good stab at capturing the original at a more affordable price. I once got close to an original but much as I was in love with it, the corners would have been an issue and it would probably have end up a safe dweller/flipper.

I like the Monaco but the watch doesn’t like me! I have small wrists (6.75” and square) and I find the watch just doesn’t suit me, it sits on my wrist like a clock. Suggest you try before buying. Possibly the originals were thinner?

If you have flat wrists you may find it OK, but despite the relatively modest size I think the watch suits a larger wrist.

    A modern Classic.
The dial and the crystal are works of art.
It will feel a bit clumpy at first, until the Leather has had time to soften, the clasp feels a bit cheap.
I'd say a BNIB example for £3000 is a bargain, they are £4650 RRP now.

I love THAT Monaco! I have a 6.5 inch spindly wrist, and I think it wears great. It is bold, and it is a bit slab-sided, but I love it. Im saving now, and in retrospect, I should have got one instead of the conventional Speedy Pro I went for

That really is a classic looking dial I wouldn’t mind one myself.

But I think the advice to try it on first is best for you.

Lovely watch, tried one but it wasn’t comfortable as it didn’t sit well on my wrist.

Yes, but not the Heuer only logo version, but it is considerably cheaper.

There isn't that much difference in price between the some of the Monaco models new, apart from some crazier 24 editions, and the strangely appealing V4 models. So best to buy the one you like best - a like like an Omega Speedmaster in that respect.

I’d be amazed if this is from a bricks and mortar dealer, but if it is, I’d be delighted to know :)

Typical grey price (eg Chronext) is about £3200

Why the hell didn't they put the round pusher design since supposed to be a replica of McQueens??

Always meant to try one but never got around to it!

I had a new one, found it too uncomfortable. Which then put me off the old ones until a kind soul here lent me their 1133G for a few months and I loved it. Sadly they're a bit expensive now.

I much prefer the Silverstone reissue too.

    Owning a Heuer Monaco

Well I just tried it on and absolutely hated it!! Managed to try the pelagos LHD and think it’s what I’m going to go for

The tag just seemed bland and the strap felt cheap

Thanks for all the advice to try it on!

Great looking watches, but probably too big for my wrists I think.

It's a watch that I loved and ached to own... until I tried one on my 6.5" wrist. Sat like a brick. Never meet your heroes...

The Monaco is my grail. It's the one watch I can't see myself flipping! Just works perfectly for all occasions.. but if it doesn't work for you then the LHD isn't a bad substitute at all!

    Owning a Heuer Monaco

Further to my earlier post I tried a CAW211P on, courtesy of Tag Heuer, at Goodwood's Festival of Speed 2016.

Pelagos is a good watch, contains loads of tech, in house movement etc and the lhd has the casino wheel to make it more special, if I had to choose it would be out the door long before my Monaco. You can spot a Monaco from a mile away, the square case, the blue of the dial with the hint of red, it just looks way cooler. I'm on my third pelagos but it would still be out the door before my Monaco

Thanks mate. Really helpful. Went into laings today to try on the pelagos with the intention of buying it... while I was there I tried on the Panerai PAM00722 and PAM01392.... big mistake as the pelagos looked distinctly average beside the panerai.

Went home empty handed. A bit more thought needed here

Had a Pelagos and loved it, good size for me, light but substantial at the same time, nice bracelet and great clasp although the edge of the links could be a bit sharp at times. Very good lume that was long lasting, overall i really enjoyed it and would like another, preferably a blue but not fussy.
Have a calibre 11 silver dial Monaco, big old watch and hard to hide, at 39mm not for the smaller wrist i reckon. Only downside for me is the lack of bracelet, very hard to find and expensive but could well be worth it as makes it a more everyday watch, just not loving it as much on a strap.
Have a 45mm Radiomir as my more recent purchase, took me ages to like it enough to buy as its very different from the previous two. Tried different straps and seem to have found the right combination in a thin tapered brightly coloured combo, green that almost matches the lume in low light.
All three are so different from each other and all of them fairly big, which do i prefer?? hard really because they are different, but first out would be (if i still had the Pelagos ) damn do i have to decide? at a push maybe the Panerai.

Interesting reading in this thread. I own a Tag Monaco calibre 12 blue face (I think its model CAW2111.FC6183) and like it alot, in fact its a watch I coverted for a long time before I really knew anything about watches. But after seeing the pictures of the Heuer Calibre 11 CAW211P (I prefer the CAW211A 40th anniversary more though but I'm unlikely to find / afford one of those) I'm liking that even more. Does anyone think I'd be able to get a straight swap for one and is it worth doing so in regards to quality of the two different watches etc.

I had a couple of Monacos in my early days of collecting. Pretty iconic without a doubt, but I was put off with a few service issues from TAG on other watches, and when I asked LVMH based here in Manchester if they could polish a Monaco, they replied "no as it's far too difficult a watch to polish". It's a square watch with barely any fancy polishing at all.

This was at least 5 or 6 years ago but it's still put me off, and it's unlikely I'd go for this type.

However for some reason, the 24 models and the V4 models are much more appealing to me, which they probably aren't to most.
