    Hand engraving a watch case

More akin to gunsmith work, and given we have gun owners on the forum I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get this done to a watch. It's a project itch and I'd like to scratch it! Example pic of what I'd like done (although not decided what watch yet)

There was a lovely engraved watch on here a while back, that was up for sale more recently. I think the guy who did it was Finnish.

I found a sales thread about it. The original thread had more details.

If my memory serves me correctly, and there is an ever increasing chance that it hasn't, then sir alan of dapper of this very parish has had similar work done.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

I've seen the work of this lad on a different forum. He seems very nice and passionate and I really like his work.

I saw really elaborately engraved Panerai on the net, can’t find it now. It’s kind of like getting your watched tattoo, at least if you get bored of it you can always take it off.

Great idea! You could rent the space out for advertising and have the 'watchfinder' logo emblazoned on the side
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

    This was mine

I bought it from the guy who got it engraved, by a man called Viljo Marrandi

He does lovely stuff, but it is not cheap.
The original ownere eventually regretted selling it and he bought it back off me, by which time I had swapped the dial over to the full lume version

Wasn't that a joint venture with one of the obvious shotgun makers; Purdey, Holland & Holland, Beretta, William Evans or maybe it was Sawn-Off Sid from No 34, the Estate, Peckham?
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

    Hand engraving a watch case

Well I'll be damned if I can raise any response from any of the engravers listed. Oh well

You only started this thread two days ago. Hopefully they're busy.

I really like the engraved watches, would love one, just not sure i would have an expensive one done as you pretty much kill the potential to sell on.

Good point, but conversely, when I asked Viljo how much to engrave an Octopus crawling over the side of a watch onto the front besel, his quote was (from memory) about four times the value of the quartz Aevig Corvid which I already owned, engraved in a similar manner.
So there has to be s happy medium, where the value of the engraving is in harmony with the value of what it is engraved upon.

I'd buy one that was pre engraved. Harder to sell but difficult to ascertain affect on value. Prob little or even a slight premium. Just maybe take longer but tbh I doubt it would be sold in my case

Not really given this much thought until now but it strikes me that buying a pre engraved watch would be a bit like a second hand tattoo, wouldn’t you want the engraving to be personal to you?

I'm sure the last thread on engraved watches didn't go down quite this well.

Personally I think on the right watch it looks amazing and I'd be all over it if I was loaded and had a suitable watch to pull it off.

If I liked the design no. I wouldn't expect to do the designing part anyway, so barring initials or personal elements in a design it wouldn't bother me. It would be a unique piece regardless. Some kind of generic swirly engraving wouldn't require buyer input I don't think

    Hand engraving a watch case

IMO it would kill the resale value stone dead, yes you may find a private buyer that has a similar taste but In 30 years I have never been offered one from a trade supplier

Well, that's the best looking milgauss I've seen....,
I've only ever seen one engraved watch in my life in the flesh so I think the rarity would keep its value well enough. But the cost would appear to be north of a grand, so you might have to write off the cost of doing it

You could try Joanne Ryall of Artemis Wild Designs: http://www.artemiswilddesign.co.uk/watches.html

Although I have not had any work done by her I have seen her work up close (on the engraving vice and under magnification) and it really is from the top drawer. She engraves for many of the top gunmakers.

An engraved watch may not be to everyone's taste, but the work on display in that link is exquisite.

When I was pricing up some engraving (see above) I approached Ms Ryall to say my appetite had been piqued by the Marrandi work.
I got a very short reply to the tune of "I am way too busy, if you like his work, ask him".
So I never got to campare prices, although her work looks exquisite
