Finland - a hundred years of independence 6.12.

Today, the 6th of December 2017 is our hundreth independence day. A big day for us Finns, truly a good cause for celebration. Lots of nice recognition abroad. More than 50 important places are lighted up in our colours of blue and white - including the Colosseum in Rome, the Cristo Redentor in Rio, the Niagara Falls and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in Newcastle.

I'm hoping you'll raise a glass with us this evening and wish us good luck.

    Cheers,
    Antti

Read an article about Finland hitting 100 on the BBC this morning, have a party!

Yep, me too! I have a great deal of admiration for way Finland survived through some particularly turbulent times.

I’ve only recently read Tuntematon sotilas by Väinö Linna.

    In English though.

Excellent. I shall certainly be raising a glass later to wish you, your nation and your country the very best.

And apologies for this, but it has to be done.

Congrats! And please add 1000 yrs with great stuff from Finland: Nokia, Salora, Alvar Aalto (everything he designed!), Linux, household scissors /can't remember their name..., my first Saab 96 (MY 76) and proper education! We, the Dutch, like to look at Finland and admire their products and lifestyle.

As said, add at least 10x 100 yrs.

So urban holiday then. Holy triangle of Helsinki, Tampere and Turku it is. Probably easiest to roll into Helsinki and see what's up. Some two hours to either Turku or Tampere if you fancy a change of scenery. I'd suggest you try and arrange a visit to Sepan Sarpaneva's workshop in Kaapelitehdas. Check out Suomenlinna fortress. Some decent restaurants there and a great place for a picnic weather permitting. Get naked with strangers at Kotiharjun Sauna, the only traditional wood fueled block sauna left in Helsinki. Have a stroll in our beautiful nature at Nuuksio national park and don't forget to take some Finnish sausages with you, there are dedicated places for camp fires you can prepare them at. Start at Finnish Nature Center Haltia to get oriented.

For nightlife Helsinki boasts to be home to the easiest nightclub in the world to get laid, Milliklubi.

Anything else or something specific, just give me a shout.

Not much of a camping man myself, got enough of it in the army. The Nuuksio tip I gave above was pretty much the depth of my knowledge, sorry.

Congratulations to Possu and Finland! Stayed in Levi last December for a few days and was very well looked after by the locals. We'll be back again now that we've got all the Santa stuff behind us.

PS And thank you for all those mega rally drivers!

My mother was taken very ill while on a birthday celebratory cruise. She was taken to Helsinki Hospital on life support for six days before she passed away. The Finns were simply magnificent, including the country's leading neurosurgeon who was assigned to her case because, as it was explained to me and my family, "We never want you to have any doubt that we did everything we could for her."

Wonderful people, wonderful country , who will always have a special place in my heart.
So clever my foot fell off.

I have worked in all four of the largest by population Scandinavian countries, I enjoy working with the Finns the most. Direct and to the point and hard working. We like to call them Russians with attitude ;-)

On the other hand if I ever have to work in Sweden again I will commit murder.

Congratulations on your 100 years of independence !
