Thread: SOTC 2017 - 13 years of collecting

    SOTC 2017 - 13 years of collecting

My SOTC after consolidation...13 years of collecting and still enjoying every minute of it (technically speaking 10.5 years - dry spell for 2.5 years).

    Thanks for looking.

    Cheers

    James

That’s a well considered collection indeed.
Definitely covet the Lange, the VC, the de Bethune and the BP FF.
Your insurance premiums must be interesting!

Rolex Oysterquartz (17000) SS beater; Cartier Santos quartz in steel/gold for dress wear; Audemars Piguet Huitième chronograph in yellow gold; Glashütte Original Senator Excellence SS; Glashütte Original Panoreserve SS; bated breath for arrival of Stowa Flieger.
    Need more . . . .

Wow...lovely, let's hope they don't all need servicing in the same year!

A serious collection indeed! A few unusual pieces as well. Lange the winner for me... Although I’d imagine that would be saying which is your favourite kid!

Seriously eye-popping. Well done Sir. Good to see some unusual pieces. Maybe you could provide some details on some of those that are not so familiar? Most of those deserve a separate post in their own right.

    Thanks again.

Lovely collection. Looks like we have similar tastes! The de bethune is the stand out piece for me. Wonderful.

Amazing collection, away from the norm and all the more impressive for it. For me the standout is the ff, but then I am a devoted fan.

What a stellar collection! Such variety, and mostly left field too, which is a big bonus imho. Great work.

Really nice collection, thanks for sharing. As has been said would be interested in some background on the less common pieces.
Also, any that fell by the wayside over the years?

    Amazing collection.

Have you considered some smaller diameter or watches?

Hi, i'm really hoping to get a MIH watch next but i've to start saving for it. I've a wish list below but mindful that i may not be able to afford them at all (can't stop a man from hoping right?):

    1. FP Journe Octasport
    2. Urban Jurgensen Reference Big8
    3. Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergs No.25 (i'm really hoping it comes with a date function)
    4. Armin Strom Gravity Date
    5. H.Moser Pioneer (if it comes with a date function)
    6. Kari Voutilainen VINGT-8 (if it comes with a date function)

i had about 30 watches in the past from Glycine Airman, GO Panosport, Chopard Mille Miglia, Breitling Avenger, Omega Great White GMT, Zenith Defy, FM Casablanca, Cartier Santos 100XL, GP Seahawk, JLC Navy Alarm, Tudor Monte Carlo and others....but my taste changed along the way and that's when i decided to consolidate and try to keep to 10 pieces (painful but an essential process). With some success (2&1/2 years without buying any), i finally succumbed to the recent 2 pieces that i bought. I think maybe i'll try to keep it to 15 max now, briefly venturing into independent brands.

Yes, it’s suitable as a dress watch. It’s using a F. Piguet movement.

only 40mm to max 44mm. I’ve small wrist so 40mm/42mm is more suitable.

    Fantastic collection!

Have you considered trying anything a little smaller...? They are all lovely watches, but are whopping on the wrist (unless the camera is deceiving).

I am all for enjoying what you like (a two finger to what others think) ... I certainly wouldn't be brave enough to wear such large pieces on my little wrists.

    No, Pam 270 is 44mm. :)

And I bet it looks good on someone with adult-sized wrists. Sorry, James!

Lovely collection of watches! But I assume these are all for just collection and not wearing? If so, what do you wear on a regular basis?

Superb collection, some great independent manufacturer's.

    Certainly consider FP Journe.

That they're nice pieces goes without saying, but a really eclectic and nicely balanced selection, really nice!

Best collection I have ever seen, some real top end marques there. Would be interesting to also see the boxes each one came in, bound to be some nice examples. Good luck with future collecting.

A nice inspiring collection. Makes me want to consolidate, reduce numbers and up the rarer watch count.
It's just a matter of time...

i'm glad someone said it! That AP also, even the lange is borderline in that picture. It is all subjective however! All stunning pieces none the less!

James, your collection makes many others look pedestrian and unimaginative. Absolutely stunning!

I’m certain the apparent size issues are just the way they’re photographed on the wrist.

I have to say my eyes are irresistibly drawn to the De Bethune, even though it’s not at all my kind of thing. The dial execution is lovely.

In an attempt to be slightly more constructrive than I was last night, here. Same wrist, same watch. The first photo taken up close with a phone illustrates the foreshortening that I talked about - teh watch genuinely looks bigger. The second picture was taken at stretch. Look at the positions of the lug tips. It looks like a differently sized watch.

Some serious watches in there but all I could think was how big they looked on your wrist aside from the Rolex.

Which of them is your gardening/DIY/larking around watch?

As mention numerous times that's a cracking collection
some quality watches, not sure I could pull off or afford many of those
The VC would be 'the one' out of all of them for me

As others note some great pieces there.
However, Qatar-wol is on the money - several of them are way too big.
My guess from the photos would be that James is either from Singapore or Hong Kong and has quite small wrists which are just not suitable for several of the watches he has.
