I am delighted to report that Rolex GMT-Master 16713-T450371 was brought into one of my stores this morning, its bearer wishing to buy a spare link.

The watch is now in my safe, awaiting involvement of the officer dealing.

Gentleman bearing it was unhappy but decided to leave, despite my invitation to stay.

    Usual recording was in operation.

Do you memorise every stolen watch serial or just check every watch you handle?

Bravo Haywood, I bet the owner thought he would never see that watch again. Hope the cctv provides a few leads to recovering more watches & a prosecution.

I'd like to think that my memory of Rolex numbers is rather strong, but remembering the number of every one that I'd seen reported stolen would be impossible.

As well as accessing one or more of the third party registers of lost / stolen watches, I also built my own proprietary software system which helps us to identify watches that have been reported.

It helps that my watch team are as diligent as they proved in this instance, something peculiar about the watch arousing their suspicion as soon as it was shown to them.

Lol, I was being a tad facetious. I find it quiet remarkable (though commendable) that a guy comes in for a link and ends up losing ‘his’ watch. The fact that he’s left it without kicking up a fuss tells a story in itself of course but you must have many customers come through your doors, vigilant doesn’t cover it! But then I guess, sometimes it’s just a hunch.

Would you put him up overnight?

Indeed. Did not wish to speak with the police - possibly had a parish council meeting to get to.

I know a place which offers a thin mattress and meals on a tray, but the ensuite facilities are basic.

At what point do you say the Police have been called? Shame you can’t string them along until they turn up but I guess that could be anytime, or do you have a decent relationship with the constabulary?
    Cheers..

Typically we will try to draw what information we can before it becomes necessary for us to state what the position is.

We are sadly in the same boat as everyone else as far as awaiting police response when human life does not seem to be in imminent danger.

Just hypothetically, if the victim had been trying to claim that this watch were worth between £7,000 and £9,000 then he would perhaps be most disappointed to find that it had been recovered.

    Hypothetically.

Hypothetically again, if a private seller of some of these watches explained that they had "found them in a bag on a train" . . . . . which happens all the time, of course . . . . . then when next speaking with the investigating officer, I might ask if he is familiar with the offence of Theft by Finding.

I would tend to believe the vendor if it were in the Bucks area in August 1963.
