    Nasal Douche

Well here's something that I wouldn't have believed I would be doing.

Filling my nasal cavities with salt water by squirting copious quantities up my nose using one of these:

A GP suggested it for my catarrh and rhinitis.

Its made a big difference and although it felt strange at first I find the sensation rather pleasant now.

If you have a stuffy nose, excess mucus etc it might be well worth trying.

Just thought that I would share that with you.

Good for sinus infections also, as suggested by my G.P.

I use the Sterimar cans of salt water rinse when I get hayfever. It settles the hooter down nicely after a bout of sneezing

My GP recommended this one: link.

    Nasal rinsing works really well.

But here's no need to purchase those exorbitantly-priced saline solutions, it's easy enough to make it up yourself.

Indeed Ralph. I make my own up with salt, bicarb of soda and pre boiled water, from a leaflet given to me by the consultant I saw in my local ENT department, in order to give some medication for nasal polyps to have the best chance of success.

Spot on. It's also standard treatment post-nasal or polyp surgery. (I don't bother with the bicarb, but I believe it's effective for severe conditions).

I love my neti pot, and wish I'd discovered it thirty years ago. I just use boiled water and ''Himalayan salt' from the health food shop.

However, it does look a bit suspicious...

That's the one I use and recommended to my own GP! NeilMed works for me.

I have one of those for cleaning out my ears, the nozzle avoids spraying the ear drum directly to avoid damage.

    Love it!

I vaguely remember these as yoga exercises from decades ago. Was called 'Jal Neti Kriya'. There was also one where you 'floss' the cavities clean with a thin long cloth.

Is this an Ann Summers thread?

    Just asking for a friend.

Mrs LuvWatch has had an article published in Nursing Standard and the BSACI. All about Nasal Douching. Even has photos's of her demonstrating a simple method with a mug and products which can be bought over the counter.

Me: "Would you recognise a nasal douche?"

Mrs AO: *unsure* "You mean like Loyd Grossman?"

This could turn into a 'guess the appliance' thread.

Don't be daft, it's designed to irrigate both nostrils at the same time..

    Unhappy

Having suffered sinus pain for years, out of desperation I bought one of those medi kits.
Being impatient I used it without cooling the water fully, it wasn’t a pleasant experience to say the least!

    Don’t the CIA do this?

BTDT too, lesson learnt the hard way. :-(

For those who are contemplating this procedure, the most effective way is to alternate between one nostril for insertion and one for evacuation, that will better rinse the sinuses.

Do you mean waterboarding? If so, it's not even remotely comparable. Trust me on that.

Been using the NeilMed version for a year or so now for my chronic rhinitis, good stuff!
