Out of those 2 I'd choose the zenith...
Hi. New here. I'm planning to buy a wedding-birthday-christmas gift for my soon to be husband.
He loves watches and owns a speedmaster, seamaster, tag aquaracer, a couple of certinas and hamiltons. He has 50% of his watches with leather strap, other half is bracelet. About 70% is black dial, he likes that.
I want to give him a watch for Formal ocasions, such as our wedding...so i will buy leather strap.
I like silver dial for formal or dress watches and candidates are IWC portofino chrono silver dial, silver hands but brown leather strap, i'd like black but i can't find (dont like silver dial and gold tone hands) and recently i discovered the Zenith elite chrono, silver dial , silver and blue hands, black leather strap.
I can't decide.... IWC seems to be "more famous" but i read calibre is not in house, so the zenith will be more "exclusive" in that sense.
Both are 42 mm. He likes big watches.
I wonder if iwc chrono in black would be suitable for dress or formal. As i know he likes black dials, but also has silver dials.
Help me decide, please. Sorry for long post and bad english ☺🙂
Out of those 2 I'd choose the zenith...
. Owned the Zenith. Classy, elegant, watch. With the El Primero movement. I would recommend it, but do not pay retail. They also do it in blue, which is tempting.

I'd go with the Zenith as well as it looks far more elegant. Plus you can't go wrong with the El Primero movement.
Zenith, for the movement as others have commented.
For me it would be the IWC. I find the dress chrono's look more 'dressy'.

Easy decision, the Zenith.
Zenith all the way,Portofino is not an IWC bomber
Thank you all. Any photo of IWC chrono of your collection. ?
Zenith all the way. Far better finish and movement than the IWC option
An interesting choice to make. I wondered about some vintage pieces as well , which always go well at weddings . Omega , Universal Geneve , Vintage Zenith to my mind offer lovely pieces and though I understand this will not be sold on , it’s nice to know they’ll highly likely retain value and may appreciate. Here’s an Omega Deville from around ‘69
As a dress watch I'd personally not be looking at a chronograph and would probably choose a Zenith over an IWC but that's just personal preference.
If it's definitely a chronograph that you're looking for I'd be trying to find either a 1960s Heuer Carrera or one of the late 90s re editions (Cs3110)

Having very recently purchased an IWC Portuguese, which I love, that Zenith is also rather nice! Not been on my radar at all but will now do some market research on the brand.
I'm an IWC fan, but Zenith make some lovely dress watches
Thank you all for your comments..recently my boyfriend said that he doesn't like Zenith 😐 !!!!! what watches like portofino normal (not chronograph ) are good for a dress watch ...but it has to be at least 41 - 42 mm
What do you thini of Iwc portuguese silver dial blue hands for a wedding watch??
Thank you again...
Slightly leftfield choice, but what about a Heuer Monaco? There's some really nice Silver/White/Grey dial models. I especially like the current white dial LE with grey subdials and yellow details

As he end a sea master and speedmaster, perhaps something from Omega would be preferable.
I' m thinking iwc portuguese. Around 5.5kus in usa. Black or white ? I guess Id choose black. Those blue hands dont seem for dress to me...for same price there is a jaeger very elegant, kinda small.. Just in white though.
The question now would be iwc or jaeget lecoultre??
Depends which JLC you're talking about, though JLC is generally regarded as higher quality than IWC
That JLC is a classy choice. Will he like knowing that he has something rare and special on his wrist, even if no-one else in the room knows it? That's how I feel about mine (not the same model), which was a present from my wife. The finishing, the in-house movements used by other brands in much more expensive watches, and the simple elegance all appeal to me. But they aren't for everyone.
JLC for me, is more dressy watches than IWC and qualitywise far better.
