    Bath

Might have a couple of hours free in Bath later on between trains.

Any advice of what to do? Wouldn't mind a stroll around as I've never been before.

    Watch shops welcome too!
    Thanks.

Mallorys for watch shopping, then off to colonna and smells for excellent coffee. Pie and mash in the Raven is spot on too. All walking distance from the station. For a beer I am a big fan of the rifllemans arms, the bath brew house is also with a look.

Thats the best place in Bath for watches. If you go to the Royal Cresent check out the botantical gardens that are next to it. Its a lovely place.

Other than that.....there are plenty of pubs about! Enjoy.

There used to be some good vintage clothing shops there that also had a good stock of old leather beef cases.

    Could be worth a look.

Lovely place Bath and I don't live too far away, If I wasn't busy I could have met up for a beer but you would probably end up missing your next train!!

As has been said Mallorys is a good watch shop and right in the tourist area so they sell a lot to the Japanese I have been told, can always have a look at the Roman Baths next to the Abbey.

I've lived here for the last 30 years. Agreed Mallory's is the only place worth looking in for watches. Rolex, IWC, JLC, Tudor, Patek, Panerai. Roman Baths if you like that sort of thing. I'd go into the gift shop at the Abbey & pay for a guided tour up a lot of steps into the bellroom, inside the clock & up onto the roof. Great views from up there

Go into the fabulous art gallery opposite Mallory's: its a beautiful atmospheric building, with some classic art works..

    Bath

I was a student there back in the late 80's - early 90's. Weather permitting - It's one of he best places to just mooch about with no set agenda - just wander around & soak up the atmosphere stopping occasionally to take in the sights/snap a few photographs & to take refreshments - lots of nice cafés and pubs.

From the station, just head toward the Abbey & Milsom street & see what takes your fancy.

First walk up to the Circus and Royal Crescent - marvel at the beauty of Bath's c18th property developers (!), back down Milsom St, pint in the Old Green Tree or The Raven. A look in Mallorys for the watch angle, over to the Abbey and Roman Baths area, walk down South Gate shopping area which will lead you back to station..job done, have a good time!

Excellent itinerary, although there's no Cathedral in Bath ;-)

Bath's great for a couple of hours, but gets boring quickly once you've been around it for a few years! It's a bit like most other towns, except with around a 10:1 ratio of tourists to locals, so expect to have no real room to move and overly priced everything.

Wander back from Mallorys via the Pultney Bridge steps and along the canal back towards the station. Great views, do it most days on my lunch break.
Gets you out of the hustle and bustle of tourists and buskers.

Thanks all. Thanks to Keynsham's station not running trains, my visit will now only about 45 minutes. Enough for a wander around still!

In the spire at the top of that one you can see something protruding out - that's actually the peregrine falcon Web Cam:

Ah, Bog Island - I have hazy memories of several boozy evenings in there.
A friend broke my nose on the dance floor one on occasion - friendly fire incident during a rousing rendition of Sit Down by James - so I skipped off to toilets to re-set it - did I mention booze was involved ?

I went to the med centre the following day to get it checked out & they weren't impressed with my handiwork. So had to go to the hospital for a proper nose-job. Happy days !

    Hmmm....yes and no!
I have (fond?) memories of standing in there and having to keep a hand over the top of my pint in order to stop the condensation on the ceiling dripping into it. The joys of a club built in an old public toilet.

Cadillacs was a much classier <ahem> place to get drunk and make an arse of yourself.

I remember shielding my pint, & not just in Bog Island - we seemed to hang out more in The Tiergarten, which was almost as dank & dingy, but the music was way better.

Go there quite a bit Dave, great place to just walk around and grab a bite to eat.
However just realised this was about 8 hrs ago and you're now tucked up in bed.

I spent every summer of my childhood in Somerset and most days in Bath (when not enrolled in the local school for the summer), at the Pitch and Putt and tennis courts at Weston Road (by the Botanics). From looking at the map, the golf is still there, but can't see the tennis courts on the south of Weston Rd (with the nice old janitor guy with the funny-eye).

Even then (80's mainly), Bath was busy. But, on visiting more recently, it's now much worse (sign of the more global times I guess). Such a pity.

I loved clotted cream at the Pump Room with the mini orchestra. Also visiting the Bath Stamp and Coin Shop on Pulteney Bridge (coins for me in those days, not watches).

    Ahhh, the memories .....

I think it has a charm some other places lack.

I worked there 7 years (& we bought our first flat there).

You're right about the tourist ratio. The local business community were great fun, although it's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone elses business. In my case I was related to a goodly portion too.
