My bother in law recently got 'married' in the Dominican Republic, cost him £15k for 2 weeks all inclusive with 5 kids and the ceremony. He did get a nasty shock as they wanted to add another few grand for documentation and the like. They decided to say sod that, got a cheap registry office marriage in the UK and then did the ceremony and the rest out there. So be careful that you are getting the price for everything.

Took over a rural hotel in Menorca in October which was end of season for them where they would have been closed anyway. Including photographer, rooms, food, DJ, band, cars etc it cost us about £8k all in - we paid for the rooms, all our 40 guests had to do was get a flight and turn up for the weekend. We restricted it to family and close friends only and we took the family out for a pre-wedding evening meal also.

Totally relaxed weekend, which everyone loved - we were lucky with weather and it was 28C+ for the week. Most of our guests either stayed or booked another hotel and stayed the rest of the week for a short holiday.

Caveats - my wife is Spanish and speaks Catalan also - you really need to speak the language or find someone to help as organising things is rarely straightforward even with fluency

One thing worth considering if you get married abroad is the guests.

My daughter in laws friend got married in Cyprus and my son had to fork out for flights and hotel for himself, his wife and my two grandsons.

As he hardly knew the girl he was not best pleased!
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I initially felt a bit like that when a friend of my wife got married in Vegas a few years back. We ended up building a holiday around the event to make the most of the trip, touring around California, Utah and Arizona first. Despite me not previously knowing any of the other guests the wedding turned out to be a right hoot, one of the best I've ever been to, with everybody really relaxed and enjoying themselves.

Quite complicated this getting married abroad business (I have an 18 year old just started at University, a 16 year old just starting A levels and a 1 year so need to juggle dates. we've gone from:

    Las Vegas
    Caribbean
    Florida
    Lake Garda
    Ibiza
    Mallorca
    Dubrovnik
    Venice
    Algarve
    Somewhere in the U.K.

    Down to:

    Lake Garda
    Somewhere in the U.K.

In short, she wants to get married yesterday, so it will be U.K. this Christmas or LG next May/June time.

    I think . . . .

Just pop down the registry office.

    Easier all round.

If you enjoy travelling - Zambia is a great place to get married...

We got married here overlooking the Zambezi River

Fabulous place, had a safari drive in the morning and then we got married in the afternoon.... What could be better?

The key here seems to be keep it small and to close family/friends. As said above, there'll be someone who isn't going to be pleased to shell out for a family's flights if they barely know you.

As well as paying for all the rooms we also told people not to bother with any gifts. We got a few anyway but it was another incentive to jump on a plane as the outlay was limited to a plane ticket and some spending money.

She wanted to look at a local wedding venue (Michael Caines menu)to compare a Christmas wedding. As soon as we arrived - stunning location, restaurant, bedrooms, grounds and overall ambience. She was sold not only ton all that, but this year instead of next. Done deal!

Ive let you all down ......

    I'll get my coat!

Second time around, we got married at the Mayfair club we are members of. It’s “abroad” for me! A very small affair for immediate families and a handful of close friends, and we had a lovely day. But at the planning stage the eye opener was the sheer choice of “alternative” venues available.

An Elvis impersonator gives the bride away and then sings two songs at the end of the ceremony.

    Cyprus.
    Bellapais Abbey.
Absolutely beautiful and very economically priced. Lots of options for accommodation and easy for flights.
