    Watches from India

I notice that there are a lot of watches on ebay etc that are being sold from India.

I am quite liking some of the Seiko 5's

Anybody had any dealings/ experience with buying from the Indian sellers?

I have bought Seiko watches from India for parts. All were running (badly) and very dirty.
Fine for the price I paid though, and exactly what I expected.

Often loads of stuff like like Fortis. Condition always looks just too good - get the impression they're either fakes or 'Franken'.

Most watches from India at the Seiko 5 price range will have fake disks and hands and be either over-oiled or dirty inside. I'd personally not take the risk.

I went through an EBay India phase myself.

I think the only 'honest watch' in India is likely to be the HMTs. They are good fun and safe enough to muck about with at about £6 each.

I learned a lot about watches messing with HMTs and Pobedas (Russian).

I have bought 2 from India. A Seiko 5 and a Ricoh. Both for £5.00. Both are still in my collection and work fine. They are a reminder to appreciate a watch for what it is. You don't need to spend £sss to enjoy this hobby.

    Any preferred suppliers from there?

lots of redials seem to come out of india - even an HMT i bought once for peanuts had been redialed...!

They are built from parts, some working, some broken.

I got a Citizen for £10 - case was right, but movement was in wonky so the stem would fit at 4 o'clock, which made the repro dial wonky inside. And none of it was actually mounted, just put into the case and the back screwed on, so the movement and dial jiggled around, and the auto winding rotor couldn't spin.

Still, got my money back via PayPal, so it's not all bad!

From what I can see there's no demand for them at home and, in Delhi at least, they can be a little tricky to get hold of. I normally found the best way to fight off fake Rolex sellers in the markets is to ask them "Do you have any HMT?". They stare at you as if you have three heads and it really puts them off their stride.

And if they haven't been redialed, the originals dials always seem to have been repainted, with varying degrees of success.

I nearly bought one once, and then noticed the dial was numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,7,9,10,11,12.

I've had a couple from India, upto £10 and know you are not buying much and i reckon they are ok, but i wouldn't pay any more than that as almost nothing is right about them.

I've bought a few that way.

    Generally speaking, don't. Buy elsewhere.

Vast numbers of frankens, repainted dials, questionably serviced movements.

It says a lot when a seller has numerous identical watches with different branding on the dial being the only difference. I personally wish there was a way of filtering out India from my worldwide search on eBay.

Ive bought a few HMT's for well under a tenner each delivered.

They have all been a bit rough and had things like misaligned hands, old spring bars (sometimes shoulder less, so have to be cut off) and poorly repainted dials.

A bit of cheap fun and my grandsons enjoyed playing with them.

This is the Seiko 5 I bought a few years ago from India. Small by the rest of my watches but keeping very good time and less bulky under a shirt. It's understated but distinctly Seiko. Lots of watch for a fiver. Bargorama.

    ^^^ Can't be sure but I reckon that's a franken.

Not that I think that this should put you off wearing it if you like it! I don't say this to spoil the pleasure of your watch; it's just an observation in the context of this thread.

You may well be right on all counts. However it doesn't distract from the enjoyment that £5 gets you.

And I think that is how you need to view any watch from India, very cheap and plentiful fun for under a tenner.
Let's not forget it's only people like us are going to know they are not right, as long as you don't pass them off as good pieces then have some fun.

    Absolutely, I agree.

I feel the same about Vostok Amfibias and Komandirskies. Many of the vintage ones from Russia and Ukraine are frankens but I don't mind, as long as they look nice and are a pleasure to wear.

Like others I have bought from India to take apart and learn more and for daily wear. I bought a job lot of about 10 watches for £4 or £5 shipped and a Seiko and HMT for £10 each that ran great for the money.
Once having bought a faulty HMT I ended up have a really interesting Skype conversation with the seller in Mumbai. Go for it.

You can come across nice boxes for Indian watches.
