magirus, thanks for highlighting the link SNAFU - now corrected. That will teach me to attempt to do it on my iPad, lying in bed without reading glasses!

Good post and interesting read. Used to watch The Rockford Files when I was a kid, great TV series. Wonder if we'll read about Lady Gaga's Tudor in 40 years time...

Thanks for posting - as a 3647 owner I'm naturally going to look at this with interest, but to be honest any well-worn and much-loved watch will have a story, and this is a very well-written one. Even better, it wasn't one of those articles that often come up when an item's about to be sold, simply a daughter retelling her father's story through a much-treasured heirloom.

Thanks for posting the article- I'm the author.

I met James' daughter earlier this year when I first saw the watch, but at the time she was not ready to tell the story, or for photos to be published. I had these cool wrist shots on my phone, but couldn't show anyone! Her dad did have other watches, some of which will be sold- but she is keen to do that quietly. At this stage, Gigi doesn't want to sell the Carrera given it's sentimental value and the fact that it was the one he wore the most. As I said, far from pushing the story, she was more concerned about her family's privacy, which I respect.

So, while I can't rule out that the watch could be sold at some point, I can say that the story is not part of a marketing campaign. Carlo, the collector who took the photos, cleared out two days of his schedule to see the watch and take the photos- and refused payment from me for his time. He was as excited to see the watch as I was.

    Appreciate the support and interest

    David

So 'in-universe' - Rockford was such a fan of James Garner he wore a watch with his name on it.

Nice article David and great that the watch and the text mystery has been resolved for the fans. For me, and I'm sure many others, James Garner was part of our growing up. Depending on your age it was either Maverick or The Rockford Files - for me the Rockford Files. I think it's great that the family's privacy has been respected but also great that Gigi has allowed us a small glimpse of her and her father's past. I hope she keeps the watch for the rest of her life.
