I procured a brand new bracelet for my DS-8 a couple of days ago, sized it and wore it round the house. Took it off shortly after that, so scratchy and horrible, and certainly not worth the £125.

However, this morning I put it on and realised that I'd left teeny tiny stickers on the butterfly, I could hardly see them. Took them off, super comfortable! :0) You'd think after 35 years of interest in watches I'd have known that.

Much nicer to wear on the bracelet...

No problem at all, I just thought immediately thought of the Cortina. Probably my age and an attempt at humour. I’ll get my coat...

    Show me your Certina

My grandfather bought me this Certina Chronograph in 1971.

I'm not a massive fan of bracelets. I have some watches on them and others which have them which I wear on leather (or god forbid a nylon NATO - that's only my DN Voyager)

However that gives the DS-8 a very different, sportier look, so best of both worlds!

    👍

Unfortunately, I don't have anything I can really contribute, other than to say how nice it is to see a thread like this which is focused on a relatively affordable brand.

Certina is a brand I've never paid a great deal of attention to, but I'm really liking a few of these designs.

Is it pronounced ker tina or sir tina?

As it's Swiss I always pronounce it 'sir tina'. Seems to be pronounced in that way at the dealer.

They make some lovely pieces, and the prices are very reasonable for a completely Swiss watch. I was looking at the DS Action diver which is beautiful, but went for a Davosa Ternos instead.

Just got this in the post. The new Certina DS Action Diver with the Powermatic movement with 80 hours power reserve. Released at Basel this year. Very well made and with some upgrades from the previous Action Diver, among these a new bracelet and clasp with diver’s extension.

Just thought I'd mention that I bought my grey DS-8 on 6th September and set it against time.is .

It's still correct to the second against it.

I'm not sure if I should be surprised (I've never actually checked a quartz watch's timekeeping before), but that seems quite good

A bit of a cheat as I’ve pinched the image off their site but I thought the new DS First looks good. The model I had which I do miss was starker with classic baton hands. I think they’ve added a bit of interest with this latest edition. For anyone pondering about them I’d say finishing is excellent and crowns are excellent.

According to the manufacturers the name Certina is derived from the Latin "Certus" meaning "sure". In most languages this means it is pronounced "Sertina", or in French "Sairteena"

When the name was adopted in the 1930s, the owners claimed it was easy to pronounce in all languages - seems they were wrong lol

I'm quite interested in a Certina. It's a brand that doesn't seem to get a lot of mention here. Particularly interested in a DS powermatic 80.

I notice they have relatively few dealerships supporting them in the UK...none in Central London. Not sure why they aren't that popular...I would have thought they sit level with Tissot and Hamilton.

Anyone got any experiences/recommendations of Certina, or any places to get a good discount?

Excellent quality and legibility - really should wear it much more than I do.

Rather than start a new thread, I've revived this old one - on back order but for £182?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Certina-Qua...3906341&sr=8-1

Also at Jura for same price:

As far as I’m aware Swatch took the decision to push Tissot in the UK. I gather that Certina has a stronger market in Scandanavia and Germany. Jura watches supply Certina
There was a short lived dealers on Oxford Street who ran a wide range of Swatch Offerings from Mido , Union Glashutte , Hamilton , Certina but sadly they gave way to a Longine boutique ( nothing against Longine , it was just nice to see European brands up close ).

I think Certina watches are very solid pieces for the money. The Crown on my DS First was better than in a Longine Conquest and the Watch was a step above Hamilton imo . Don’t think you can go wrong with them really .,The new DS 200 PH which is a faithful re-edition of their 67’ release looks excellent and as Certina were a wee bit naughty with their Omega styled watches back then you can avoid the whole sub mariner homage look.
Their duplex dialed Diver Chrono I thought was as good looking as the Seamaster 300 Chrono.
Overall think they are excellent watches

Interesting to see this from last year, wonder if the reissue will make the original more sought after.

I recently acquired this almost mint Certina DS-2 PH 200M. It still has the original Seahorse strap that it came on. I purchased the watch from Steve in the US. A few years previously he'd managed to track down the original owner, Paul, who sent him the following email:

"Hi Steve - it certainly looks like mine, and if it is, the strap was on it from new. I received it new for my 21st birthday (i'm nearly 59 now) from my parents whilst we were living in Nigeria as expats (my father owned a few companies out there). Shortly after my birthday, the oil company i worked for, started to move me around the world and at this stage my parents put all my belongings into storage as they moved back to the uk to retire. As you say, the strap looks like new because i probably only wore it a few times before it went into storage. Completely forgot about it for the next 30 odd years until we cleared out last year! Strangely enough, i've got another identical one somewhere in the same condition, as i bought another one to replace that one which again ended up in storage during one of my overseas moves - i've just never found which box it's in! Hope you're enjoying the watch, who did you buy it from? Cheers. Paul.

"

I've developed a soft spot for Vintage Certina Divers & would like to get some more. I'd particularly like a PH500M or PH1000M..if my wrist can handle it!

The watch has been enjoying some fresh air this morning.

I set this when the clocks went forward at the end of March and 2.5 months later, it is running 1 second slow. I don't think that's at all a bad result for a quartz watch :)

A colleague and I were discussing her newly acquired Certina, a brand I had heard of but never seen in the flesh. Having looked at their website I now think a 3 hand Quartz DS Podium would be a great addition to my collection. Anybody have experience of the Titanium version?
