Saw LAT8 on a McLaren as it bombed past me this morning on the Dronfield Bypass.

Suspect he wasn’t going to be.

Few plates in Essex that are along the lines of ESX / ES55ESX etc

Also seen A1 floating around Regents Park on a mini.

Funnily enough, we were talking about this plate yesterday and how it's been around Preston for years. First saw it on an MG in the 80's then on an MG Metro of all things!
Not seen it for ages despite living in Leyland!

I recall seeing Ray Reardon driving a Merc. many years ago in Torquay with CUE 1 on it. Also, Steve Parrish (Suzuki rider and truck racer into 70s) had PEN 1S but I think it was taken off him and deactivated by DVLA or some other big brother type gov. dept.

I was driving around the New Forest last week, and spotted M54 LLY on a Mustang.

I also saw A1 near Regents Park on a Mini about 15 years ago, very classy! Surely it's got to be the most valuable plate ever if it was ever to be auctioned given it is the very first registration issued?

Friend of my dad's used to own UPU2 many years back.

Many years ago before private plates became a thing and there was no value of interest in them, my dad owned a car with the registration FMC1, he contacted Ford UK and asked them if they would like to buy the car for the plate, at the time my dad owned a garage business and he was offering them first refusal at market value for the car and thought they would love the reg for their show and rally cars being that it was perfect for Ford Motor Company, they told him they couldn't see the point and declined.

An old bodybuilding friend has B16 ARM as his number plate. Another guy at my gym, a pro bodybuider has B1 CEP. Both plates were quite fitting for the owner.

When I was 18 I had the chance to buy B16 DOM for around £750, instead I decided to spend the money on a Gucci watch which I thought was the dog danglies at the time. Annoyingly I've never seen the plate come up for sale since but I suspect it would be a lot more expensive looking at similar plates. Whilst I still have the watch it just sits in a draw, as being more educated now I can't bring myself to wear it in public haha.

V12 XKE on an X-Type the other day.

Spend an unreasonable amount of time wondering about the circumstances. Stuck it on his runabout while the e-type is being restored? Old fella forced to sell his p&j but hung onto the plate, now relegated to a cheap snorter? Jag fan that bought the plate and is looking for the car to put it on?

A few years back when the Nissan 200 SX was still on sale I spent a Christmas driving round in one with registration '200 SX'. The police paid a bit of attention to it more than once. Then there was the knackered old Micra in Kingston with 'A911 RSR'. Had I had the money I'd have offered to buy it (but then keep it on something knackered). It appears to now be on a blue 911.

Around the corner from my mums house... Corner of Milman street/Cheyne walk Chelsea.
And incidentally where Jack Nicholson used to stay whenever he was in London filming.

The couple that live there change their cars every couple of months, but they're always very nice cars.

I used to see that old Micra parked in Kings road, Kingston....

I bought the reg number 911 GTF from a bloke in Kingston and had it on my old Citroen BX diesel estate for years, despite me having an old 911 at the time.
Ended up selling the reg number to a bloke in scotland.

When I worked at Alan Day Mercedes Benz in the mid 80s, we had a lovely customer who was an elderly Professor , as I recall, and every 6 months he would buy a new SL and put this number on the car. His thinking behind this was, as his current wife particularly disliked his daughter, the car and very valuable number was to be left to her in the event of his demise. Nice to see this photo as it reminds me of this particular gentleman.

I assume it's your initials? Those not up to speed with a particular manufacturer and the iterations of each model will just think you're driving a 2005 car!

    A good plate ...

I do not have one, but my Impreza has BD55 xxx as the original plate, and a few people ask if it supposed to be “BOSS” plus my initials.

I have always thought “he’s a cock” whenever I have seen anyone with BO55 or BD55 etc where it is a private reg., and am now considering buying a private plate simply to hide my normal one!!!

One I saw in south of Edinburgh was B16 EGO on a large black range rover. With square-ish font it worked very well.

Preumably for someone with a big ego, such a number plate is no issue! :-)

There also used to be a SUE 1M in Edinburgh, presumably either a lawyer, a Sue, or both.

My lad bought the perfect plate for him P13 JNH his initials are JNH but also his knickname from school was Pie, which his mates still call him, so he his knickname P13 and his initials on the same plate.

Cost a massive £250 plus transfer costs.

I saw a ‘single single’ on an Vauxhall Astra. Was so surprised at value against the car that I cannot remember the registration (so half a story here)!

Otherwise saw MAG 1C many years ago on motorway.

Personalised plates don't exist in Germany, they do in Sweden (and I believe Norway?) but are very rare up North as against the 'Jante lagen'. I suppose the only other country where I have seen many personalised plates outside of the UK is in the US, but they do it properly with a free format rather than the fixed character/number formats of the UK where one needs to substitute letters by numbers.

I don't have an issue with people buying personalised plates, but I don't get it how people in the UK are shelling out thousands for seemingly random combinations of letters and numbers with a meaning only for themselves (and engage in illegal spacing and tainting with plates using coloured screws).

I was actually born in the German city of Bitburg, where the German number plate regime allows for a rare gem:

Bitburg also being a major American Air Force base, many of these disappeared during nights and feature large in the stolen plates register (and as such are blocked for re-issuance) and the BIT-CH combination has nowadays become impossible to obtain.
