Yeah, sell your stolen watches in the same city, that won't get you caught :-) Another piece of scum off the streets...

18 months...not enough!
I guess a lot people see buying stolen goods as a victimless crime "Well, I didn't steal it so it's not my problem", alhtough that implies that they know or suspect it is stolen.
I see a lot of this in the bike world. Yes, it is not the same amount of cash but the concept is the same, I suspect many people probably aren't as diligent as us here are on the provenance when buying something that expensive.
It's been said many times before - "buy the seller"

how comes the traders who have purchased aint getting charged for handling stolen goods
The "Independent" dealers mentioned in the article were, shall we say, "a bit lax" in checking the provenance of so many watches being offered to them by a single person.
So you buy off a'specialist watch dealer'. Later you find the watch was stolen......what's the situation?
You'll lose your watch but you'll have legal recourse against the seller. Watch must be returned to rightful owner or insurance company.

Well that is a lot of stolen watches sold into pre-ownded specialists I wonder who he's been selling to?
Given the quantities they must have had suspicions?
I wonder if my Rolex is hooky? It's been back to Rolex in my ownership so I assume not as I assume they check the register of every watch they service.
How many of us were aware of the Art Loss Register?
I certainly don't recall any discussions about it here, nor about The Watch Register which provides what looks like a very useful service:
http://www.thewatchregister.comBuy with confidence by checking the serial number of any second-hand watch with the Watch Register or asking if your seller has already done so. It is the simplest step to ensuring good title. Alternatively, if you have suffered the theft of a watch, registering it on the Watch Register offers you the best chance of finding it in the future.

I wonder if the Dealers in question have given details of customers they sold the watches too
Typical loose poorly written journalism . In the beginning it states he was the only Director of quality Marque watches then at the bottom states he wasn`t registered as a company . Maybe they mean VAT but still an 18 Month sentence for knowingly dealing /fencing stolen property is pathetic . he`ll be out in 5 months probably . A real mess for the dealers who didnt check out the goods thoroughly enough .
