B-sides that were better than the A-sides

    (1) I had forgotten that I Am The Walrus was not only a B-side, but on the flip of Hello Goodbye. In Lennon's words: "can you believe it?"

Sorry can't give a YouTube clip, because so few Beatles tracks are there.

    (2) One of Oasis' greatest songs, Acquiesce, was not just merely a B-side to the dreary Some Might Say, but then only on the 12". This deliberate act of hiding away must be one of their billion nods to The Beatles

    (3) Time has not been kind of the Jesus and Mary Chain's second album, Darklands. The second single from it was Happy When It Rains, and on the B-side was this perfect little song, Everything's Alright When You're Down:

    (4) The goddawful GLC single Your Missus Is A Nutter - a very poor follow-up to the entertaining Greatest Hits album - had on the B-side this masterful (and thoroughly NSFW) piece of old school hip-hop:

There must be thousands more examples of this - what have you?

B-sides that were better than the A-sides

    Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band

    A. I'm The Urban Spaceman Written-By – N. Innes

    B. Canyons Of Your Mind Written-By – V. Stanshall

Both great, but my vote goes to the B-side of this platter sports fans.

    Beach Boys

    A. Wouldn't It Be Nice

    B. God Only Knows

Again both great, but God Only Knows is something else.

With you 'in the section labeled shirts' on both of those. :-) TBH could never understand the attraction of 'Urban space man'.

Paul McCartney once said that God Only Knows is the greatest song ever written.

    Me too.

I don't know if I'd say it was better but Yellow Ledbetter is certainly every bit as good as Pearl Jam's Jeremy.

    edit: here's one I didn't know was a b-side 'til I started Googling...

    The Verve
    A - Drugs don't work
B - The crab, and, Stamped, both of which are better than the A side.

I just remembered that No Sleep Till Brooklyn was originally a B-side to the 12" of Fight For Your Right. Probably not better than it though.

Alice Cooper's B-side The Ballad of Dwight Fry is significantly better than the A-side Poison.

The B-side to The Kinks' Everybody's Gonna Be Happy is the gloriously bitter Who'll Be The Next In Line. I suppose some would prefer the A-side, just as there are some people who prefer Penny Lane to Strawberry Fields.....

The Kinks' US record label saw the light, though, and released the single with the tracks swapped round

Maybe I'm the Urban Spaceman should get the vote, just for today.

Masterplan by Oasis has stood the test of time better than Wonderwall I reckon.

What about tracks on EPs as opposed to being named? I’ve been listening to Belfast by Orbital a lot recently and it’s a very special tune.

Agreed, my favourite ever band , was lucky enough to see them 5 times, would add tales of the riverbank to that, better than absolute beginneers

Boney M - Rivers of Babylon, with Brown Girl in the Ring as the A-side.

That will be stuck in your head now!

thats just cruel, those songs haunt me.

what happened was they released it with the B side as the A side most people hadn't played the B side so they bought the record again and got 2 hits.
