How embarrassing - I have that thread bookmarked!
I didn't make the connection - sorry Futon
Would love to see some pics on here if you are able
No worries. Yeah - I have an Alaska IV.
The tritium, still glows at night! Though not enough to see the time. TBH, it's not that much different from a normal 1620.
I'll post up some pictures when the Kizzi arrives. :)
I've somehow ended up with 3 Speedmasters, the 1621, a normal 1620 and a Speedsonic 'Lobster' - I think Omega definitely consider the Speedsonic, to be a Speedmaster.
Apropos the huge Omega box issue....
If the latest offering does it for you then great (if you have the storage space that is)
Personally it doesn't do anything for me and I think that it would be good if one of the classic red boxes was offered as option. Perhaps the money saved could be used to reduce the RRP and / or produce a better bracelet?
Ive replaced mine with one and much prefer it that way.

It's reminds me of the early days of computer games on the Amiga. Firms could charge an extra £5 per copy if it came in a bigger box regardless of the quality of the game inside.
Ian, if you mention that bl***y box again...!!!
Ian might just have a point there, that is a lot of packaging for a relatively small item in the foreground. The second picture with the red box is far more preferable. The problem is that you can't do anything with the big package other than stick it in the back of the wardrobe.
Alaska IV 1621 NASA Prototype, only 12 made, each numbered on the back, mine is number 1.
Kizzi is here:
I like the strap, it has the right feeling to it, something bashed together, strictly functional, looks not important!

Looks great!
Good to see some pics of such a super rare Speedmaster too!
This has probably been posted already (I hadn't seen it until today) - here is the head of the Omega Museum on the Speedmaster procurement for NASA: http://www.watchprosite.com/?page=wf...pzt=1456703651
It's amusing that Rolex didn't propose a Daytona for testing, but it seems NASA tested one anyway!
It's also amazing that of the 10 watchmakers contacted, by NASA, for submissions, only 4 actually replied!!!
Fascinating article. Interesting that the Longines and Rolex didn't do too well in the tests!
I'm not a bracelet fan (try as I might I cant get on with them) but Ive never tried a mesh and having seen some photos, vintage and modern of Speedmasters on these think I will give one a try. Spotted this one on eBay - will report back when it arrives. Apart from the comfort factor I suspect that it might be too shiny - easily cured with some fine wire wool I suspect.
^ looking forwards to that!
A brief update on the huge box issue (which I will not bore you with any more after this)
I sold it with the accessories, along with the chunky modern bracelet for nearly £800 on eBay thus reducing my outlay on this next to new Speedmaster down to £1650 - obviously the various straps Ive bought along with the vintage Omega box have added to this but things still stand at significantly less than £2K. As I don't intend to flip this watch and am not an investor/collector, than the resale value without all the bits is of secondary concern to me.
This approach may fill some with horror, but it suits me.
Well done Ian, seems like a sensible thing to do. That is a fair chunk of cash for something that you don't want or need and would otherwise sit in the back of the wardrobe.
Thanks Ken - good to know that at least one person doesn't think I'm barking
Seems like the sensible thing to do. Well done👍
Definitely bad decision
🙄
I sold my Speedmaster on here a good while ago when I lost my job, it was a 21st present to myself, if anyone has it please pop me a PM. It would have been bought from Goldsmiths in Newcastle somewhere around 2002 or 2003. Sad times. I'd love it back.
Hurry up Carl!
Thanks for the heads up Mr Curta - looks as though we wont have long to wait now!
It looks as though there is a slight taper but I'm not sure - the listing doesn't say:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MILANESE-M...53.m1438.l2649
Looking through the sellers listing I see that he does the same and similar bracelets in other sizes - however these tend to be 22mm & 24mm. I cant see any 18mm ones, it might be worth messaging him.
Thanks awfully.
Love the X33, I'm really hankering after one, I could see it as my 1 watch!
It arrived today
No taper I'm afraid.
The length of the mesh is so great that in order to fit my 6.75" wrist I would have to remove so many links from the centre part that it would be virtually unnoticeable. Being as I wanted a look vaguely similar to a JB Champion then that would defeat the object. I also didn't realise that it had this type of closure - which isn't my cup of tea.
Also very shiny - too much for my taste though as previously mentioned it would be easy to tone this down, which I would do if it weren't for the above.
Back it goes tomorrow!
I would love something that looked like a GB, but the originals don't come in 20mm and are very expensive and I haven't seen anything else that has the same look.

Thanks for this Ian.
I believe it's a "butterfly clasp".
It's a good looking bracelet, a shame it won't work for you.
I have equally skinny (& flat) wrists.
Thanks for the update, Ian. What a shame.
My trio:
Unfortunately, the Lobster needs a service/looking at, it runs for a short while, then stops, and the Speedmaster Quartz as well, the time selector has stopped working :( - hopefully both can be fixed? Any ideas on where to send them?
Paul from Electric Watches would be the obvious candidate for an f.300.

Omega (expensive) or Electric Watches for the lobster http://electric-watches.co.uk/ I think there's someone here on the forum here also but maybe someone can chip in with that?
Thanks guys!
I sent my quartz speedmaster to STS
They no longer service them so sent it to Omega who replaced the pushers among other things. Selection of functions was then very reliable.
It was something like £450
I wouldn't go down the road of separating watch and bits myself but I do think Ian got a very strong price for the associated odds and sods. The box and accessories usually fetches £250-350 on ebay and the bracelet is probably £400-£450 so to get £800 sounds pretty good to me, based on the component parts alone. At resale time, a £50 modern wooden box or one of the red plastic-leather ones would satisfy most buyers I should think, as noted above, not everyone actually wants a suitcase full of tat of dubious use.

Have to admit I'd be temped to sell my box. It's such a classic design I think it would be the last watch I'd ever sell - I kept it in preference to the Speedy Tuesday in fact, it just felt better to me.
