It depends on the person who's wearing the nice watch, and it always has to be done subtly. It's nice when you make a connection with a fellow enthusiast.
In a similar vein to another thread I've just started ;
If you spot a nice Watch when out and about do you raise your head above the parapet ?
I usually do, subtly.
I generally find those that grasp the opportunity to have a good boast never consider what you might be wearing and only want to tell you how great theirs is (and what it cost).
The more enthusiast-types will generally have a good chin-wag.
The above aren't always brand specific !

I've yet to spot anything of interest after a couple of years addiction. I guess my approach, if any, would depend on how frosty the person wearing it looks!
No.
Never.
You would be like the bloke talking loudly to himself on the bus/train, trying make eye contact with everyone.
I usually just say in passing I like your watch and I'll try and make a point of saying the model rather than the word "watch", as if they are watch enthusiasts then they tend to respect/realise they have a fellow collector when he or she knows the actual model being worn!!??
It doesn't happen that often really and Ive only made a point when the watch in question is vintage or unusual rather than the obvious must have mass purchased watches?!?
One thing I have found now that my enthusiasm has spread to some of my clients and a find them searching me out to discuss what new watches they have found and what new ones they have bought!!
Although in the same vein there are others who outwardly state that they just don't get it in anyway, then proudly display their Casio or similar watch and proceed to tell us all that their watch does exactly the same as all of ours😳😂
The usual statement is "what time does yours say?" and then proceed to tell you "wow, it's exactly the same as mine!!" This is always followed up by "how much was yours?" Although this is mostly tongue in cheek as I do know them it does get a bit old hat and is the reason I tend to wear my Sinn to meetings and conference's as it's understated and under the radar but different enough for real WIS to identify and start up the conversation!

No. Unless it's people I know. Then I insist on a try-on :)
I remember my uncle many years ago when I was a kid catching me looking at his watch. He flicked his wrist and announced "Rolex, you know."
A*se.
It depends, if it was a run of the mill modern Sub or Speedy then no, if it was unusual or vintage then maybe, a microbrand or Dornbluth would probably indicate a wis.
Cheers..

My job means I visit a lot of clients, mostly older and retired, and I see very little in the way of nice watches which is odd as that demographic is supposedly the most likely to wear a luxury watch. However I have seen a Omega Mk2 and a rose gold Patek 5035 and a few Rolex. I had a good chat to the owner of the Patek, he did mention that I was the first person to ever notice his watch! In the public arena though I would never just talk to a stranger about their watch, far too polite to walk up to a stranger and start talking about jewelry :D
I did comment to a fellow school dad on his "panerai", which on closer inspection turned out to be a Siem Reap special. Have noticed another with a Kermit but have never passed comment. Might ask him if he wants to sell it some day.....

Generally no, unless it's a safe environment. Quite a few of the people I work with are into watches so you'll often see some decent stuff.
I've just posted on the other thread that I was at a work training event last week and there were some decent spots to be had. One old colleague grabbed me at the bar Monday night, keen to show me his newly-acquired Rolex Hulk. He'd traded a SubC for it. Another, who I have in the past chatted about watches with, was wearing a YM. He spotted me at lunch and said that he must show me a pic of his small collection.
The chap I sat next to in the training session (who I hadn't met before) was wearing a bi-metal GMT IIc and we did have a good chat.
Not if it's a common but expensive Swiss watch. Too many are fakes, or if genuine it doesn't necessarily mean the wearer is an enthusiast, often just someone who bought the watch they think they should based on others opinions. If it's vintage, microbrand, or certain models of Seiko then yes, why not?
Depending on the watch, I would. a simple "where did you get your watch?" or "how long have you had the watch?" normally sparks a conversation.
A guy who works in my local chandlers has a very nice IWC Ti Chrono from the good ole days. I passed comment on it and he didn't give a toss.
No, never.
Almost as bad as asking about his trousers!
That said, a dealer friend of mine, when spotting something decent, will ask if they want to sell it.
Cheers,
Neil.
Jumped(!) on a scruffy old chap sporting a vintage 1016 Explorer in a charity shop last saturday. I presented my credentials, naturellement.....
I would never start a conversation with a stranger but its happened to me a couple of times & I have noticed the odd person staring at my watch now and then. Mainly if I am stood at a bar or in a restaurant/cafe where its clearly visible.
Lots of times. It depends on the situation, the person, and the watch.
It's just a matter of time...
I was in a specialist members' club recently and I'm sure one of the other members has the most magnificent bullhead - It caught my eye from across the room.
Yes and no. If I know the person or trying to build a working relationship with them and I can use it to my advantage, then yes I do engage in watch conversations.
I worked in a prison a few years ago. I noticed a sex offender wearing a bi-metal Sub which amazed me as having anything so valuable could result in him being attacked and the watch ending up in someones ass then smuggled out via visitors, believe it or not. It was real btw.
Probably safer with a DSSD. Smuggling that out could be a challenge........

I had lots of comments and attention whilst wearing my Sea Dweller, since sporting my Milguass GV no comments no stares nothing. Then out of the blue on the sea front in Mundesley
a young lad just said "snap" I did not know what he meant, but then he showed me his black faced GV, we chatted for a few minutes then parted company. That was surreal
I rarely to never get a comment on my watches, but when it happens it's generally another WIS and least to pleasant exchange.
Much will depend on the watch culture of your country I guess.
