There's a fantastic magazine (and a series of books collated from the magazines) called "After the Battle" which does the same thing, but with a detailed article about the battle / scene depicted in the "before" photos.
Well worth checking out if you have an interest in WW2, especially with regards to visiting battle sites / European towns.

My mum witnessed that first scene in 1944, at Weymouth as a child. The family had come into town, and had never seen such a huge gathering of military.
