Restoration no.1 - Tissot Seastar Navigator

    Hi all

This has been one that has been sitting in the drawer for a while now. It started off with finding a well used Tissot Navigator chrono, with a battered case and scratched dial. Good movement and hands though, so worth buying at £40. A few months later I found a NOS case, dial, crystal and crown for £60. That's £100 invested so far. Gave it all to my watchmaker last week, and he put it all together along with reluming the hands - cost £20. Total spend £120, and I now have a near NOS Tissot Navigator chrono  To finish it off, just need to find a suitable bracelet or strap (odd lug size of 21mm)

A couple of quick pics of the finished project

    Cheers

    Hi Ian
    Another superb job.
Would you mind not telling us how much your watchmaker charges any more as it makes me feel ill?

I love those old Tissot Navigators, I've bid for a few on ebay but missed out. They did a red sunburst dialed version which is absolutely stunning.

    Cheers,

    Tim.

Foggy, perhaps you can offer some advice for me? I have a Seastar chrono no date with a chewed up glued plastic bezel. If you were to look very closely at the plastic bezel you can see where Tachy marks used to be (overlayed?). Do you have any idea what I can use to replace that bezel? I have no idea where to look. This model isn't a "Navigator" do I have no idea what it should have looked like new. Do you know of any photos out there of what this model *should* look like?

    Thanks.

BTW nice job on yours. Looks great.

Yeah, that looks like it. Which means, and it's no surprise to me, that my crown isn't original either. I wonder where one can get parts for such a watch without buying a whole other one? Probably nowhere....

Good find though I have searched but never come across any other photos except for the dated version that were marked "Navigator", whereas mine is non dated and not marked as a "Navigator", just "Seastar".

I like the watch it's a great little beater but I would love to at the least replace the knackered bezel ring.

Part of me wants to get rid of it since I rarely wear it because of that annoying bezel ring but I can't get what I paid for the watch itself plus the new crystal and servicing - so on the shelf it normally sits. I wear it every so often though. One thing about it is that it keeps great time. One of my best timekeepers. Probably within COSC specs if I had to guess. I keep it wound and rarely have to reset it.

The original metal bezels are like rocking horse manure to find. I modded an old one with an aftermarket Rolex replacement:-

A great improvement on the battered "original"!

Wonderful job. Tissots are fine watches and that restoration is superb and so cheap.

Certainly a watch to wear and enjoy now.

    Thats a pretty amazing refurb.
Condition has always been a big concern when buying used watches but I may reconsider that after seeing these results.

So, for around £120 you got a watch that rivals a vintage Autavia for good looks. That's the kind of thing that makes this hobby so enjoyable. Well done, sir.

Haha can we revive it again. Do you know if those cases require a movement holder.

    Holy thread revival, again :-)

To answer your question, I don't think so. I still own my much but don't want to open it, but there are some good pics here of another similar watch (different case back)which should show the insides ok.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Ti...p2047675.l2557

Or this one with the same type back as mine

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

This must be the record for thread resurrection!

The resurrector's had advice on a separate thread. He needs to give the watch to someone who knows what he's doing rather than risk damage by trying to teach himself on a watch that's worth a bob or two. Unless he plans to get into repairing it's not worth buying the tools he'll need to do it.

This is a noob question...:-) How do you install case clamps on this watch? Can you tell me how you do it?
