I bought a 556a for less than that but I think it's closer to 1k with bracelet. I wish I bought the 556i sometimes. I would also look at Longines for 1k ad there are some really nice ones out there for that or close to 1k. The Sinn was brand new.

If I had £1000 to spend on a watch, but didn't know or have any inspiration of what to buy. I wouldn't be asking net nerds (I include myself) what I should buy. I'd keep saving until I find the next 'must have' then either buy it, or if it's over budget keep saving until I can buy it. Over which time I might go off the original watch and find a different 'must have'

I would agree, it's not a great price bracket. Get something cheap like a Mondane or Gshock to tide you over until you can pick up something worth holding on to.
Used Sinn U1 was my choice just this week a watch I've owned before and regretted selling in what must have been a moment of madness looking at it now what ever possessed me to seep my first one I'll never know.
I'd buy the Eberhard Mareoscope on SC....a lot of watch for the money....there is plenty of choice out there for 1K...
With a preference for divers, the MM300 does it for me. My nearly new cost over 1k bit they can be bought within budget and I think it's a fantastic watch. Professional quality, superb legibility day or night and great heritage :)

I'll say Seiko MM300 SBDX001 or SBDX017 again.
I have both the 556i and the MM300 you mention and I really like them both but think the Seiko is 10 times more watch than the Sinn. However the MM300 is a marmite watch. It's heavy and tall whereas the Sinn is simple and versatile. MM300 might be a pig to get serviced in Europe but the ETA/Sellita in the Sinn could probably be serviced by a shoemaker.

As a versatile 'one watch' solution I'd suggest the Sinn 556i anniversary edition.
It's kind of a sports/dress hybrid with 200 meters water resistance, it manages to be both classy and rugged.
Drilled lugs make strap changes a breeze, it looks great on the bracelet and the 20mm lug width gives you infinite strap options.
This for me, too. One of my favourites.
Duncan serviced mine- no need to send back to Seiko.
U1 or SMP would be my call, which is just what I went out and did so I'm biase of course.
I live under the sun and put an offer of 900 Euries out on an unwanted present; an Astron SAS038j1....
p.s. just found a fairly largish, 150 cm or so, Rhinechis scalaris in the hay stack. Did a circus act with it entertaining the resident female and managed to not get bitten (by the snake) so luck is with me :-)

Maybe an Eterna Kontiki repop 2nd hand (if you can find one)? A Quartz Omega Seamaster pro 2nd hand. A Seiko 6105? Some nice things out there.
I think the simple and perfect solid-back 36 mm Nomos Club is the watch to have at that money, as it's an example of real watchmaking in a price bracket that's dominated by assemblies of generic parts.
Otherwise, it looks like you've done your research and it's tough to fault the 556i or the MM300. (Seiko is legit, too, and Sinn is a no-BS independent company that makes their own cases.) You can also find the excellent Sinn 356 for that money on the secondary market if you're into chronographs. I like older (i.e. pre-Swatch-Group) Omegæ, but they're perhaps not the most practical choice as an only watch, the new ones don't interest me much. I don't think £1000 would get you much of a Breitling, not that most of their stuff is particularly appealing in the first place — with a few lovely and costly exceptions, especially from their vintage production.
I think I would try to find a secondhand titanium Brietling Aerospace - excellent VFM in my opinion.

I would get a Seamaster Pro Quartz 2264 with the sword hands. In fact, that's I did. Hard to beat, for the price. All the looks of the 2254 auto, with lower service costs and better functionality, thanks to the quickset hour hand which makes it a great travel watch.
£1000, tricky amount.
Personally I'd save for something more compelling, but if you must spend it, a Nomos Club, which at least has some horological credentials

Seiko MM300 for me. Had a number of watches around that price point including a couple on the list you mention. MM300 has outlasted them all. The quality is superb.

Lots of excellent ideas here, thanks to everyone who has contributed this far!
Let's just say that my pre-existing pull towards MM300 hasn't dimishined at all. Only thing that has kept me from pulling the trigger already (apart from price tag) is the size and particularly thickness: I have barely over 7 inch wrist! I guess the only way to get over it would be to buy and try, at least apparently they are super easy to flip.
Or then, saving a little bit more and going for Speedy Reduced would be another option that's super appealling. Totally different kind of watch compared to MM300 but on the other hand just as "everyday watch" or "my only watch" material due to versatility of the style.

Think I'd try and get hold of a Sinn 144 st sa for that sort of money, or a 356 Pilot 2..
New, I'd go for Longines Hydroconquest or maybe a new VHP. The blue one would make a lovely beater.

I have a couple of more expensive and cheaper watches but I like and own few you could try. All bar the oris were bought new for less than 1k.

Nope. The quartz is now circa £1k. Autos more like £1300 plus.
