I had the pleasure of meeting him at Goodwood a couple of time. A proper gents and world class racers.

Last time I saw him he also hit me whilst reserving his golf buggy - there is a bit of me that wish he had. Not many people could have claimed that they have had a accident with John Surtees whilst at Goodwood.

Top bloke, the world is a little worse off today. RIP (Race in Peace)

Sad news. I have always been astonished, and a little saddened, that he did not receive a knighthood for his unparalleled achievements of winning World Championships on both two and four wheels

A very sad loss to the world of motorsport, RIP.

A true legend from the glory days of motorsport.

I wonder what will happen to his fantastic collection of cars-
I've always considered the BMW 507 he was given by Count Agusta in 1958 as one of the worlds most
desirable classic cars.......1958, still only one owner from new-John Surtees!
It will be a world record price for a 507 without a doubt should it go to auction.
Amazing man, amazing collection of cars and motorbikes.

Gutted to read of his passing. The terms "great and legend" are 100% accurate when referencing John Surtees.

As mentioned by someone else, why was he not a Sir? Perhaps it was his choice I don't know.

R.I.P. One of my heros when I was 16 - 17 and he was winning the TT. A nice guy, I met him a number of years later at silverstone when i was working for a F5000 & F3 team and he was there testing the Surtees F1 car. No idea what the year was but Colin Chapman was there testing the F1 Lotus that had torsion bar suspension, Lotus 72?.

How I'll remember him, giving it welly up the hill at Goodwood. He always seems to be a great name to give in F1 questions on Pointless, sadly the general public don't seem to have heard of him

That's sad. I got a book signed by him at Goodwood a couple of years ago. His achievements in top class bike and car racing at the top level will never be repeated. If anyone in sport deserved a K it was him, not a bunch of drugged up pedal pushers.

That's actually from Spa 1966 (the year Big John parted company with Ferrari mid-season).

This is the Ferrari 158 carrying his lucky number 7 with which he won the 1964 championship.

R.I.P. John Surtees - one of the last of the greats of that era of motor racing.

I like many also met John a few times - often at Goodwood and he was due to talk at Beaulieu last weekend at an evening that Ago and Geoff Duke, Mansell, Stewart and others have all done, (but of course has been ill since February so never happened)....

a finer more pleasant gentleman you couldn't find.

I started to look into trying to nominate him for a Knighthood a few weeks back (which needed friends and family supporting letters to progress)
just in case he passed in the next few years knew this needed to happen soon and know others have tried to do so,
after the likes of Beckham et al wanting one despite never winning anything at a world level it was criminal he wasn't knighted when say Lenny Henry of Tiswas has one....he only got CBE in 2016 for gods sake as it was....

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/formula-1...-petrol-blood/

legend, gentleman, racer....and as Vale never jumped only man ever likely to be the F1 world champion and Motorcycle Champion.
I hope MV in SBK honour him this weekend in Thailand, I also hope Ferrari honour him on the first rac with a blue and white stripe perhaps on the car?

14 years to the day Sheene also passed..... RIP and RESPECT Mr. S.....

A great racer whose "double" will never be achieved by anyone else.

A local lad, my uncle worked for him back in the day.

    RIP.

Sad indeed and criminal he was never knighted when Moss was. Just curious though, why is everyone so certain his 'double' will never be achieved again?

Maybe Marquez could do it, as his talent is as good if not higher than Rossi, he has the potential to win 10 championships though he's not as showy so the marketing may not be as strong a pull for an F1 team.

Rossi was only 3 or 4 tenths first sessions off of Schumacher when he tested the Ferrari. As he has a huge following this could actually have made it into reality.

The structure or setup in each championship isn't there in the same way I think, it really was a different time and as all Motorsport is far more of a business now all sorts of other factors come into play.....

and as it was hard enough back then to switch, even the legend that was Hailwood did it and though fast then found the F1 paddock too stuffy compared to the Motorcycle one and swapped back....
at the risk of upsetting again the F1 2017 thread I do reckon it's a one way st. A natural quick bike racer is more suited to adapting to racing a car at speed and high level than a car driver going to bikes... IMHO..

but the other way round is assuredly very slim odds .... at my ARDS licence the instructor said bike riders do have a lot of feel for how the machine is moving, grip, etc. and they tend to learn quickly and do well in the cars.

and even bikes to cars now I think it it just is far far more unlikely............. and actually as he didn't get the Knighthood he deserved I'd rather JS has his place in history cemented with this accolade at least.....

Interesting. I agree times have changed, Surtees wasn't the only rider 'back then' to switch between bikes and cars - Mike Hailwood comes to mind - and it is clearly a different sporting world today, but I can't see how it is possible to say never again.
