Thread: Best Guitar Solo.

Who is the lad just behind Prince, in front of the drummer, with black hair, playing the acoustic?

Just seen, Dhani Harrison, I thought he looked like his Dad.

Lots of nice guitar work in this one, esp. from 5.40

Lovely haunting cover version of a real classic tune

And, of course, The Master from 1966....

I like this list from Guitar Magazine. Used to have a playlist with the whole lot on it years ago, Spotify probably has the list somehwere.

Someone just sent me this - Rory Gallagher from 1979. The solo ain't bad, but it's a storming performance overall.

Rory was great and I count myself fortunate to have seen in live at the Glasgow Apollo

    Paul Bielatowicz is quite good

Not sure it's a solo as such , but for the ELP fans..

I drank with Gerry a few times when he was in 9 Below Zero. Best I saw Rory play was at Hammersmith 1987. Gerry told me Rory was beyond help six months before his death at 47, such a waste. He was totally unique.

Very, very naughty lyrics NSFW (why I haven't embedded the video), but stonking guitar solo at around 1'10".

Love is the Law - Seahorses

The extended version sees John Squire nail a great solo that I once saw him deliver live and was note perfect, starts around 3:40

Get yourself a copy of Irish Tour is a great Rory Gallagher live album, think there might have been a film also but not seen it. Walk on live coals was the first song i had heard from Rory on this album and is outstanding...

I’ve always had a soft spot for the solo on Led Zep’s Heartbreaker.

Also, another that’s not strictly a solo but Lindsey Buckingham’s live version of Big Love is an unbelievable piece of guitar playing.

This is amazing display of poise and control, Guthrie is a staggering talent, a guitarist's guitarist. He can shred with the very best of them but he also has real depth and subtlety to his playing.

That is a very niche and excellent shout. While not a fan of the song at all, the guitar solo is the epitome of tasteful playing.

My cliched vote goes to comfortably numb, of course, but the left field choice would be 'easy lover' by Daryl Stuermer or I have a very soft spot for 'I can't tell you why' by the eagles (Don Felder)

Finally, no greatest guitar solo list is complete without Larry Carlton's effort on Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne. Perhaps the most perfect and complete solo ever.

I never saw Steely Dan live, they did not seem to like touring the UK? If you get a chance go see Seriously Dan the tribute band, they are amazing!!

Talking of Roys, and while more an instrumental than a solo, Roy Buchanan's The Messiah Will Come Again is a masterclass in string bending, and you'll struggle to find something more "70's" than this. Amazing to think that this was contemporary to the Sex Pistols.

Gary Moore thought it was good too (features Greeny Moore):

SRV has already been mentioned multiple times, his version of voodoo child has to be in the top 10 , that guitar needed a smoke after he had finished with it.
