Neither I nor the native Francophone sitting next to me can see how "les longines" translates to "the long meadows". Clarification would be appreciated.
If I remember correctly, Longines is from a Swiss dialect, not French.

Popular myth, but untrue, the fact is no one actually knows where the name came from not even Hans Wilsdorf, it just came to him
I thought/expected that Longines came from the classical scholar Longinus, who is credited with 'On The Sublime', a treatise on aesthetics & criticism.
Perhaps Agassiz called the company after Saint Longinus, who gave Jesus the last of his five Holy Wounds?
