Awesome result. That's what this thread is for. Well done both. Keep the "spotted" posts coming.

Looks great - congratulations! By chance I had my Exp 40 on today as well. It really is about all the watch you need. I’d always thought it was the “one”, but was always to small (for me) At 40mm its about as close to perfect as you can get - for me! Hope you enjoy yours as much.

A lot of the independents have a lot more greater stock in the windows. I went in today to enquire about an explorer 1 (36mm) expecting to be put on the waiting list, and I walked out with the watch on my wrist with no sales history. It felt like a 10 minute interview however about my general watch tastes, collection et cetera.
I honestly think most Rolexes are available as long as you look genuine and not looking to make a quick ŁŁ or asking to buy a Daytona

I picked up a Sub ND from an AD in Leeds last month. Six month wait, no purchase history. The sales advisor mentioned that they were enjoying the fact that more genuine enthusiasts were getting watches over the flippers.

I was offered a black exp2 last week as a walk in.

Was passing by and saw it in the window so went in to try it for size and was discretely told if I wanted it the salesperson would ask the manager to take it off exhibition and make it available for me to buy there and then.

When I was picking up my Sub LV last week I was shown a GRNR bi-metal and was offered it after I tried it on.

I didn't bite as two tone not really my thing.

It's good to see the Rolex Bubble slowly deflating although still a way to go.

I dont think there is such a thing as a TT (Bi metal?) Batman? Only steel.
Do you mean a black/grey GRNR on a bi metal Jubilee bracelet?

Yup TT GMT is only available with GRNR... Arguably Grey and Black is quite Batman-ish

That’s excellent news in many ways. Does the flipper walk in wearing a hat that say “Flippers R Us” or something?

Pees me off a little that my local two local AD’s, ones a Goldsmith’s - so I’m not expecting much anyway. The other is privately owned, tells me the lists are suspended on every Professional model. Possible exception being Explorer 1 which I have already. They might re-open them around February but there’s no guarantee.

The bloodyminded side of me feels going in with one I’ve sourced elsewhere. Five plus years wait - my arse!

There was a Bluesy in the window of the Bath AD yesterday. Price was on display and no 'exhibition model' shenanigans. I didn't go in as was on the clock.

This is an even more remarkable to see in a window:

Zero chance it’s not an exhibition piece.

It’s nice enough but I have always struggled to understand the GMT hype of the last few years. Pretty sure back in the day the GMT was a model you did see in AD windows. Think I’d as soon have a Sub Date or an Exp II and some change.

Believe the double negative has caused some confusion here.

It seems (and it makes sense) that the BLNR at Goldsmiths is indeed an exhibition piece ... And therefore not for sale.

    What is an exhibition piece?
Is it an actual working watch just being used for people to look at and try on only?
Or is it a watch minus the movement?

They are real, working, brand new and stickered watches but are not for sale to any walk in customer in the vast majority of cases.

They are often new watches already allocated to a customer who has waited for that piece but until it is set for release off the exhibition rota the customer in question cannot a) buy and collect their new watch and b) will not know that an exhibtion watch is actually "their" watch before they buy it/are allocated it.

Thank you gents for the explanations.

Well not for sale at the moment and not for sale to a walk in customer…

Will be sold to who ever the AD decides is going to get it, when the AD next receives a GMT 2 to replace it as an exhibition model.

I did wonder of the staff would be high on the list to be offered them, possibly with a staff discount to boot. The exhibition pieces I tried on had no stickers on and you wouldn’t be chuffed if you had waited 9 years for a Daytona only to be told the whole bloody town had tried it on.

I don’t think these are customers long awaited “the call” watches.

I’m sure others who share moments of intimacy with their AD will know otherwise.

I imagine it varies Ken. If I am trying on watches in a WOS group company I don’t ever bother trying on Rolex. However in a couple of independent ADs that I have purchased Rolex from the exhibition watches are stickered and are the watches that will be allocated to customers, in exactly the manner Gareth outlined in his response.

As mentioned they don’t tend to tell the customer until the watch is able to be removed from “exhibition”. This avoids them being constantly bombarded by the customer asking “when can I have my watch”. Also avoids the customer angst, panty wetting at the thought someone has tried on “their” watch.

You are probably right. I was in Goldsmiths when I tried a few on, but did notice that the SA had a BLRO on and his manager was wearing a white dialled Daytona - whilst telling customers there was nothing for sale. I wonder why?

    This

Between Liverpool and Trafford Goldsmiths I have seen 3 different SA wearing the BLRO, yet have told me how difficult it is to supply….

Chap at Goldsmiths had a BLRO, he said he had to get permission from the company to apply for one & they took into consideration his sale history. No discount. May have been BS, but who knows.

Not seen an exhibition piece with stickers. Cannot believe they would be letting people try on someone else new watch like that, sounds risky. I never tried to wind an exhibition piece but assumed the movement was non working, so didn’t even try.

I have no knowledge of how the whole list thing works, I am not on one, have never been on one, don’t want to go on one but…

If you get to the top of the list (assuming it’s a real list and not a load of BS) and ‘your’ watch gets put in the window as an ‘exhibition piece’
How long does it remain there before you ‘get the call’?
Also what happens if a numpty like me puts a mark on it?

My understanding is 'exhibition pieces' get replaced when new stock comes in. Customers then get sold the 'exhibition piece' that may have been fingered by and on the wrist of all and sundry so to speak. Exceptions may be high demand pieces that aren't readily on exhibition in windows. Pretty sure my last BLNR came straight out of the Rolex shipment to the AD.

Cheers, fair enough. Seems like a lot of effort and faff to get a mass produced watch.

Agreed. In 1999 and around 2010 I was on the wait list for a Sub and on both occasions was offered a GMT (and took them - a 16700 and a 116710). More recently its the reverse and I've (twice) been offered a Sub

It was only 18 months ago people were queuing around the block for Omega plastic tat, erm I mean bioceramic tat.

116710 was the last professional model I saw in an AD window before the madness happened. Thinking about it, that must have been 2016 if not the year before!

Can't imagine any sub being available as walk in purchase unless if it's a PM model, regardless of exhibition only tag or not...
