The Datejust design works best at 36mm, it doesnt scale up well in my opinion. The return to slimmer lugs is an improvement too, the watch head and bracelet flows better, almost like an integral bracelet, just like the pre-2006 models.

Blue dial, jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel and 36mm case is a killer combination, only drawback thesedays is the price.
Absolutely agree. Imho same applies for the Explorer - the 3 6 9 just become too big on a broader dial.

For balance, I think the 39mm looks better than the 36mm

I sometimes wonder if the one you get used to just sticks in mind as the 'right' one. So if I had owned or grew familiar with the 36mm version first, would I be saying that one looks better? Possibly.

I never owned a 36mm Explorer, but bought three times and tried very hard to like the 214270. All went within a month after purchase.

    Three times? Points for effort.

I think it looks just like it should but then some folk prefer the look of a larger dial and if you think it does then that's what matters. I like 36mm and whilst it always initially seems small when it replaces a 40-42mm watch, that feeling quickly disappears after which it feels just right. A 40mm sub then feels initially large but similarly fine very quickly.

The 116613LB thread piqued my interest, so i thought I'd have a look in the Saigon Rolex Boutique. What an awful experience - there were three 28mm DJs in the window, four 31mm DJs in the display cabinets, and one 36mm diamond dial/bezel Day Date incased in a glass cabinet. That was it.

Around 36mm for a dress watch (Datejust) works best for me. I'm hoping I can manage one of the new 34mm OP's. When it comes to the sporty side of things, like you a 40mm is perfect- shame about the (lack of) availability!

Having both the 36mm DJ (same blue fluted jubilee as above) and the 41mm DJ, I find the 36mm has the classic proportions, which the 41mm lacks.
When purchasing the 36mm DJ, the AD also had the 41mm, which I tried on. However for me the fluted bezel seemed out of proportion to the overall aesthetic of the watch.

The 36mm is a classic, and wears well on both large and smaller wrists.

Datejust 41 smooth bezel with jubilee (white dial) in the window of Mappin & Webb Manchester (yesterday).

They are obviously closed but open for click & collect. (was the only watch shop in Manchester with the watches displayed in the window)

Quite unexpected to see this many Rolexs in a shop window in Basildon, Essex.
2nd hand and didn't seem to be any bargains there.

Why unexpected? Grey dealers are always stacked with Rolex above RRP.

I'm going to guess the rhodium YM in the bottom left of the second photo is the 37mm or it wouldn't be hanging around in the window.

Let's stick to AD windows as you can buy, see, and try any Rolex if going to a grey dealer.

Absolutely spot on - it was the 37mm.

Not sure I understand last part of your comment sorry - Laings is an AD I am pretty sure? Watches were new and selling at RRP. Their grey stock was in another window.

Second part wasn't directed at you, just for the the thread. You are clearly keeping the thread going in the spirit intended. Could have been more clear, apologies.

As it happens there was a 40mm YM Rhodium with the aqua blue seconds hand in my local AD before the weekend but it has gone now.

    OP26 black

    Edit, found now. Thanks.

If anyone spots an OP26 Rolex Oyster perpetual 26mm ladies black dial with plain batons in the window/stock anywhere please let me know.

I realise that Rolex discontinued this late last year in favour of the new 28mm version, but I would really prefer a 26mm if there is still one in stock anywhere.

I would pop into a WoS/Mappin/Goldsmiths and ask if they can do a company stock check on that model. You might be surprised.

I don't really keep up with Rolex prices but I saw this in my local town (Grantham) if anyone is interested. Blue dial and is cheaper than any I can find in the UK on Chrono24:

    Exclamation

    In my early attempts to secure one particular new PM piece for my Rolex collection this weekend I located the following two watches available (as of yesterday) with a pair of Rolex ADs;

    Skydweller YG 42 on oysterflex - 326238

    Yachtmaster 2 WG 42 on oysterflex - 226659

Im happy to put a fellow TZ member in touch with the respective ADs but PLEASE only if its to make a 100% definitive purchase and to not abuse the direct referral to, maybe, ask for something else I know they dont have!

    Thanks

Would you mind letting me know which AD has the YM42, please?

I'm on the list for one and would be interested to see if my AD can transfer it over to their store assuming it's the same network.

Sorry Wiley, but both new watches are with local independent ADs and not the larger national chains.

WG. So basically you pay an extra 15k, and it looks exactly like a SS model on a rubber band.
