Just got back from Mauritius. The hotel we stayed in had a Rum Shack with a very knowledgeable barman.
Can't say I knew much about rum beforehand other than rum and coke (don't like coke) or cheap navy rum when on a bender in my student days.
They had about 50 rums and tried about 30 of them! Some of which were flavoured - I wasn't too keen on some of these as I felt they were overly sweet.
We brought a few back and got this on Amazon the other day - it was my daily drinker when there.

I quite like it on the rocks neat, for me its much nicer than Whisky as they have a slight sweet edge to them - not to be unexpected as its made from sugar cane.
Anybody else like rum or could make some recommendations?

This is my selection. The middle shelf is all rum.
L to R:
- Angostura 1919 - nice and mellow
- Captain Bligh XO - award winning, smooth
- Bacardi - for cocktails
- Sailor Jerry - still my favourite spiced rum, Kraken is too syrupy
- Mount Gay Black Barrel - the cream of their well respected crop
- Zacapa System Solera 23 - a Guatemalan blend of rums up to 23 years aged
- New Grove something or other - a cheap Mauritian duty free number
- Pampero Aniversario - lets just call this one full bodied. Too much for me when neat.

I think Rum will be the next "in" thing, like Gin - to a certain extent, but it lacks the "apperitif" appeal - so may have limited impact?
I have had some brilliant rums and have a soft spot for "Pussers' Rum"
I'll probably be branded a philistine, but I thought it was exceptional

Nice idea but I think it's been and gone as a "fad" amongst the youngsters. A lot of the bars in Manchester seemed to be pushing it a couple of years ago with not much joy - the only ones grabbing attention seemed to be the silly strength things like Stroh 80 and Stroh 160. Tried both of those with family in Germany, never to be repeated!

Appletons, Wray & Nephew and Kraken are normally found in my glass with ginger beer though
A bit of a rum fan here also, never tried it with ginger beer though, will need to give it a try. I have not really gone searching for my ideal rum but tend to pick up some of the dearer ones when on offer in the supermarkets.

Although I have yet to try Kraken but keep hearing it being raved about.
Rocks/old fashioned glass, two ice cubes, double measure of a spiced or nice golden rum, 2 quarters of a lime squeezed over and thrown in after, topped with 3/4s of a 150ml Canada Dry mini-can. I can smell it now.
Good rum is wasted on me. I just chuck it in som orange juice so not much point in anything fancier the Captain. Even that is probably overkill.
had a few good rums on my many work trips to Puerto Rico.
the battle lines there are drawn over the local Don Q rum and the Cuban interloper Bacardi, both of which are made on the island (from imported sugar cane now!), places there seemed to do one brand and then their entire range or the other
last time I was there, the darker, and spiced rums that are becoming popular here were not as popular as the golden and some flavoured versions and Cristal Don Q white rum which seems to be in everything, I guess their version of "Bacardi"
the carta fuego and carta negro Bacardis were evident, and are here now too I see, but the more subtle Don Q versions of both were more enjoyable but much more difficult to get here.
Don Q Gran Anejo for me when I can get it, just on ice with a squeeze of lime.
they do some more cooking versions, Dark and Gold blended I think was the best for a good flavoured rum which is nice with mixers and I try to grab a bottle or two of that when I'm there as well.
but no matter how I try they don't taste quite the same here :(
Ditch the Sailor Jerry for Old J or Kraken. I thought Kraken would be over hyped crap but when Aldi had it on offer last Christmas i thought "why not" and its spot on. Sailor Jerry hasnt had a look in since then tbh
Dominica Reserva from Amazon and now Waitrose is superb, now the only rum we buy. Smooth and slightly sweet. Drink neat with no ice.

It's the vanilla in Sailor Jerry that I like, and I find Kraken to syrupy.
Zacapa 23 and Diplomatico reserva exclusiva are my current favourites.
Interesteing how some people drink neat ( or the odd ice cube) and others drink with coke,etc.
I like the former and seems a waste putting £40+ liqour with cheap and nasty over sickly sweet pop!
The bar man recommended putting a single ice cube into a cocktail shaker with the rum, give it a good shake and then just pour off the rum without ice into your glass. This cools it down without diluting it.
I suppose its a bit similar to those ice rock thingies you put in whisky.
The trend for flavoured spirits seems to continue apace. Spiced rum isn't new (obviously), but I am surprised how many prefer sweetened / coloured / flavoured spirits to "purer" spirits (see the number of people posting about flavoured American whiskies, for example). I suppose it's a matter of taste (as it is with everything), and perhaps it reflects the sweet tooth that so many appear to have, but I'd suggest people try non-flavoured products at some point, and drink widely, as r(h)um is even more varied in terms of production than whisky, with all the fun of ageing too. Probably.
Hi , went to Trinidad on a little business trip in the early part of the year and got talking to a South African yacht skipper who had lived on the island for the last twenty odd years and after a few beers talk turned to the 'best' rum and advised Angostura as it was brewed on the island , now I do like a good rum as I have worked around the Carribean as I am in the yacht business (hence the screen name) and I took his word and and did a bit of research and picked up a bottle ago Angostura No1 cask strength which is beautiful I have to say , second to Goslings black seal and a firm favourite Which is Antigan English Harbour ,try them all I say!
Angostura isnt a rum i know of will look out for this one next time im in need of a bottle.
I think its the variation of rum that i like tbh - I can drink all of them neat and all with ginger/coke i guess it depends on my mood
Same here I can't stand Kraken it's way too sweet but in an unpleasent way. I find Appleton more to my taste.
I'm the first to admit that I'm no rum purist and prefer it as a mixer, but my go to since moving away from Southern Comfort has been Sailor Jerry mixed with Cherry Coke. Tried Kraken when I had a Tesco gift card and found it ok, but prefer a spiced rum. As for Wray and Nephew, I had some of their overproof rum in a Wetherspoons many years ago, absolute rocket fuel!
Ordered a double as the price was £17.90, I misheard it was £79.90!!
I was in Leeds last night and went for a run. On the way back spotted a wine merchant who was having rum tasting so thought it would be foolish not to partake. Certainly better than Gatorade as a post recovery drink!
Tried a few nights car ones, especially the diplomatico which will be my next purchase.
They recommended the hedonist bar who are having a run theme the next few months so popped into their after a shower a had some appletons and gosling

I've tried Appletons and Flor de Cana but my favourite (so far) is El Dorado 15 yr. I just enjoy sipping it neat when I want to relax, and it's especially warming and comforting in winter.
Just popped into Waitrose to pick a bite to eat up and saw this on special offer for £35 don't know if it was just my store as its not on the general Waitrose website. So picked one up to go with the Fever-Tree ginger ale I was recommended.

Tried a distillery on the way to Black River National Park yesterday. It's called Chamarel and also has a fantastic restaurant. Had to bring a bottle of the XO back with me as it tastes delicious.
The tasting tour is great....hic!
I normally drink Cuban or Venezuelan reserva but I've just cracked into this, not for the purists, but by gum it's very nice!
Anybody into Woods? You can get it from Morrisons but be careful as it's very strong.
