    Best Rolex to get

Right, slightly odd thread, but excluding GMT / Daytona what would be your vote for best "future proofing" Rolex watch? Needs to be mans, and not a gold braclet

    Thanks

  2. #2
If you are talking about a Rolex that will age with you rather than investment then it's hard to look past the explorer. I think it has more " staying power" than my sd 4000. Oddly it's a watch that I don't think I mind picking up the wabi of a few years of regular wear if anything it adds to its charm.

    Submariner — duh.

I agree with the above, because I will buy the explorer to compliment my Seamasters... but i think you need to include the Submariner in this kind of discussion. It is probably the best "investmant" rolex to buy.

Thanks to all so far, but yes I'd like to buy new, and for it to stay with me.....

Why limit it to just Rolex. There are plenty of hot watches around that sell well above list if you are lucky enough to source one at list. The PP Nautilus and Aquanaut, some of the Baselworld watches like the the Omega CK2998 limited edition and the Tudor Bronze.

Back to the question asked, vintage over new every day of the week - remember 20% of the new price goes straight to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. A good Red Sub is unlikely to lose you money.

That is not hugely helpful TBH - no amount of 'waving the wad' will get you one unless you have history or are lucky and the OP does not come across as having patience?

Back to the question asked, vintage over new every day of the week - remember 20% of the new price goes straight to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. A good Red Sub is unlikely to lose you money.
There are lots outside of being (expensive) classic vintage that are worthy of a punt.

If anyone actually knew for definite don't you think they would have already bought one?
Speculating on watches as investment pieces is pure luck imo, and if bought as such you wouldn't be able to enjoy it for fear of damage therefore losing value

Buy a new ceramic daytona at rrp.

There might be one slight problem with that plan but it's fundamentally a good plan.

But doesn't fit the criteria or not losing money. Most Milgauss's advertised secondhand on here are around 3.5k

If not losing (much) money is the most important thing, then can't beat the LV

    My choice:

One of the least expensive in the range - but a classic

Stand to be corrected but pretty sure the O/P has a BLNR and Daytona Ceramic Dave.....

Any steel sports Rolex - everyone has their own favourites (Eg Seadweller 4000c is a classic IMHO despite the fact that I own a Cameron edition). There are always transition models that might be worth 'more' but that will only be known with hindsight.

More importantly, enjoy the watch. That's their real worth IMHO.

Gareth, even if he hasn't the OP sought to exclude them so defo my bad. Lazy end of day posting by me. It seems he may be better off buying a Rolex he HASN'T got.

    Sure, understood Dave.

I suspect that's what he was asking given what he already has. For me I'd add a Deep Blue to a BLNR and Daytona Ceramic to have the full (current/white hot) set....

There are any amount of better asset classes out there if you want an "investment", and none of them will make you stressed about what's on the end of your arm when you're out there living your life.

If you want an investment, go and see your accountant. If you want a watch, buy one you can afford and like.

Quite simply the one you like the look of most, you will look at it many thousands of times. Anyone who worries about future values, and uses the term "investment" in regard to watches is in the wrong hobby.

The op asked about future proofing not investment.

From that I assume he means what will look good now and when your old and wrinkly.

I'd say the 36mm DJ is the perfect answer.

Does it absolutely, positively have to be Rolex? I would gently suggest an incredibly valued watch with a dial you'll never get sick of looking at and ownership tells the world you know a lot about watches. There is a tenuous Rolex link with my reply.

I have no affiliation with the seller, just using the ad for illustrative purposes.

I bought a SD4000, just because it is my favourite sports Rolex. You buy what you love, or save your money. It is never an 'investment' , because we don't know how watch prices will go, and that approach spoils the fun, for me anyway. Buy what you love, be prepared to take any knocks over long-term value. It is a hobby after all.
More left-field, maybe consider something like a Grand Seiko, not such a 'safe' buy, but what watches they are. I far prefer mine to my Rolexes. They just sneak up on you over the months. But you have to own one to really 'get' that weird quality they possess. As I said, a bit left-field.

If you purchase New - then you will wait a long time for financial appreciation, I think.

But buying just about any of the popular "sports" Rolex second hand - will appreciate over time. (not taking into account inflation)

I bought my first new Rolex in 1981 (GMT-Master) for £208 duty-free (around £500 in UK shops?). Not sure its value now, but has to be around £3k?

"Cheapest watch I have ever owned"

    Top performers
    Submariner (date and non-date)
    SeaDweller
    GMT-master

    Slightly lower performers
    Milgaus
    Explorer

    Worst performers
    Normal Datajust

I'm not sure about Daytonas - I suspect they are middle-performers.

Looking like the new Rolex Explorer, with a long shot on the Omega 2998 ( will find out tomorrow if I can source one )

Other options the Omega James Bond watch thingy (is this a little gimmicky ? )

Failing that, I did really like the Omega Moonwatch 👍
