Cool Rolex Explorer - 214270-0003 - new pics

Well I drove to Leicester from deepest Surrey - I had to venture past the Watford Gap - with the M1 and M25 diabolical - there seems to be endless roadworks with the crappy 50m/h average speed traps with hardly a gap between them on the M1. The M25 had it's usual crawl going on around M3 / M4 / M40 for no particular reason.

So spent 3h there 3h back and 45mins in the shop, left home at 9:30am back by 4:40pm - but hey - what a way to spend my Birthday!! I ended up with the 214270!

I can highly recommend Graham at Tarratt, Leicester. Top quality independent some lovely watches in there (Patek etc). Rolex of all kinds including the new three styles of Oyster Perpetual? - I almost got the blue starburst one - but looks too similar to my Air-King-Date.

They couldn't of course give any discount on the Explorer but as it was my birthday (did I mention that already?) they gave me a lovely bottle of Champagne (proper stuff - not 'Method') and the latest catalogue and two heavy Rolex magazines featuring the Sky-Dweller and the Yacht Master-II

I need to get some better pictures of the Explorer - but here are a couple including a lume shot - you can just see the etched crown on the sapphire crystal near the 6 - this was lit obliquely with a strong light source to see that.

I hope to have time to do a full review later guys

They kindly adjusted the bracelet and also left it all stickered up!! So at some point I will remove them - for now I've left them on. Time keeping overnight has been superlative - no change - meant to be +_2sec now - in my experience that is pretty standard for Rolex movements even without the parachrome etc.

    More later!

    Congratulations Mart :)

Much better now that all the numbers are lumed, and balances out the dial.

Graham, is a top man, met him several times, he is so down to earth.

Going to visit one of their other shops in Stratford in a couple of weeks :))

Did you "down" the bottle of champagne to celebrate your new addition and birthday?

    Happy birthday Martyn.

I really like the way they have lumed the numerals. Looks much better now. Great buy.

Pics are great, if a little coy! Haven't heard of anyone else in the country with one of these yet - good work and I look forward to reading and seeing more.

And here, is that champagne pronounced "Baron de Burp"? ;)

OK - I'd had time to take some 'half-decent' photos now, but not do do a detailed write up. . . Anyway - I'll share the pictures with you now while I get typing!

It looks to me that they've fattened the hands on it too, which I like. I sometimes thought the hands needed beefing up a bit on the SubC, almost like they've beefed up the case and markers but forgot the hands, especially the hour hand (far too thin). The hands on the new Explorer look so much better.

The hands and the metal surrounding the indicies look like yellow gold in the pics . I presume they are reflecting something or it is the light but it look great

Is there any difference in price between the latest model and the current one?

    Err?
The latest model would be the current one, would it not?
But, to answer you query, no the price is the same.

    weird
Rolex finally put the EXP-39 right, minute hand that actually reaches the minute track, hollowed out the white gold arabics and filled them with lume. Yet I prefer the flawed one.

Anyway, nice watch, understated for the brand, enjoy

the hands / indices are white gold - so reflecting ambient light (lit partially by a 'warm' light). :-) Martyn

I do like that about any SS Rolex, when people ask why so much (non WIS) instead of boring them to death about the ins and outs of a great watch, I just point to the 'face' and say "see all the shiny metal bits, including the hands?" 'yeah' "they're all 18ct white gold) 'ooh, that's why it's so expensive', "yes, yes it is"

    Job Done!

Congrats BTW nice watch, then again you knew that otherwise you wouldn't have bought it :)

I really think the longer hands work but it would be interesting to know who made the decision to alter them.

Was it Rolex admitting they got it wrong in the first place or feedback from customers/dealers etc.

    Lovely watch and enjoy.

Excellent choice. The Explorer has so much more character than the Perpetual.

On the list as a next purchase just not sure if it will feel a bit small after being used to the Explorer 2

Best value in the entire catalogue. And an object lesson in the virtue of elegant simplicity. Whenever anyone asks, I always recommend the Explorer One. £4,300 for the very essence of Rolex design and quality.
