Fascinating story about The Young Ones

Has anyone seen this before? Thirty-plus years on, have any of you ever seen the 5th housemate?

    It's an interesting article!

    What a show.

    A great show indeed.
The Kebab and Calculator (still the greatest name for a fictional pub ever) is on the list of places I show people visiting Bristol when they come for the first time (at the time it was really the Cock O' The North in the Henleaze area) and the exterior house shots were not far from there.
Sadly fewer and fewer people remember the show - as they point out in the article, half of it would probably never get made these days.

I wasn't aware of that, even though I watched the show religiously back in the day. Thanks for the link.

Me neither. I've seen each episode dozens of times as well.

Another one here that watched with great enthusiasm at the time and wasnt aware of this at all. I did catch the 'sublimnal' shots such as the tree frog etc though.

    An interesting read.

One of my daughters bought me the whole series on DVD a while back and despite being a big fan at the time I have to say that I dont think its aged well. Still worth a view though. I think that Bottom on the other hand has stood up better.

If Elton was the writer he wouldn't necessarily know what little other touches the producers were sticking in.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

However I'll probably enjoy the show so much that I'll forget to look for the 5th housemate.

The amount of times I've watched the series over the decades and never seen that! Not sure whether to thank you or not.

I used to drive my mum round the bend demanding we watched my 'recorded off the telly' VHS (oooh, have we got a video?) of every episode as a kid. Still know almost every line off by heart, but I'd only ever noticed one of those and never thought it was a recurring thing. Interesting...

Did exactly the same thing recorded it as we (my brother & sister) were suppose to be in bed from 9pm on a school day/night.
I never notice the fifth house mate but always saw the subliminal clip.

Very interesting read , Rik Mayall was a genius . Comedy on the BBC seems to have gone downhill somewhat over the last few years .

Watched this endlessly as a student. Can still quote large chunks... 'No room for me on the sofa as usual... I've got to sit on the rickety chair.'

Also building a collection of t-shirts. So far:

    - Oooh, have we got a video?

    - People's poet

    - One thousand five-hundred and seventy four gin and tonics, please Monica (slightly more obscure reference to Mr Jolly).
