    Sub 1k Automatic

    Hi All,

I'm after a new watch for the collection and am after some inspiration. I'm not set on a particular watch type other than I'd prefer it to be automatic and sub £1k. Any ideas? Perhaps something that looks good on a NATO?

Ideally I'd like something that's really quite an interesting design or has some bold colours to it.

    Looking forward to your suggestions

    Steve

And you'll literally make no suggestions whatsoever yourself to give anyone even a vague clue to stop them wasting their time on your behalf?

    Righto.

You do realise this is a discussion forum don't you?

As I said above, I don't have anything particular in mind so am open to some suggestions.

Yerrrs, it is a discussion forum. On the basis however that there are countless tens of thousands of watches that fall into the bucket you've presented, a little more information might be helpful. I mean narrow the field just a teensy bit perhaps?

Lots of helpful responses, I see...

How about a Seiko Monster in Orange?

You could buy 4 and go out for a nice meal!

Do a Google image search for 'automatic watches under £1000'.
Make a note of any that catch your eye & post links here.
We'll then be in a more informed position to offer feedback and suggestions

People are being unhelpful for a good reason, try narrowing down for us.

Dive watch? Pilot? Dress? Want bracelet? Swiss? German? Japanese? Size? etc

Actually isn't "automatic, under a grand, with no defining characteristics" the perfect description of a Tissot PR100?

OP this is a vague request but assume you are being serious?

Go to the Timefactors site - Eddie owns it. Browse the range of watches he owns. See if you like any. Go from there.

I don't like to say anything unless I can contribute something useful. Being a bit of a watch novice compared to you lot, this doesn't happen often!

Anyways as I mentioned above I'm after something a bit eye-catching so that plain Tissot is a no. I quite like the CW Typhoon and have been thinking about that for a while.

I really don't have any preference on type but I am leaning towards a Diver or Pilot. One other thing is that I can only wear max 42mm.

Sorry if I've annoyed you guys with the original vagueness... I thought I was being pretty good

    • I'd prefer it to be automatic and sub £1k.
    • Perhaps something that looks good on a NATO?
    • An interesting design or has some bold colours to it.

Have you had a look at some of eddies?, just click on the timefactors link at the top of the page, there are some fantastic watches there.

Thanks Nik. I already own the PR38. Probably my favourite watch that I've got above my Milgauss and TAG.

I like that Tissot and Damasko thanks guys. I'll go check them out

Is PVD eye catching? I guess you don't need bright colours to catch the eye. You could do a lot worse than spending £250 on this.

I had no idea that TK Maxx stocked Glycine watches! I was looking at a Airman DC 4 the other day but the £1,600 price tag put me off a bit...

    1. Post a bit more so you get access to Sales Corner (obviously make substantive contributions);
    2. Wait for the next Seiko MM300 to come up for sale;
    3. Buy it;
    4. Live happily ever after.

    You can't beat a bit of Orange = PRS3 Limited Edition £340
Although if it were my money to burn, I would go the whole hog and get the Dreadnought PRS21 GMT

From my experience of having owned one or two sub £1000 automatics I would reccomend this:

Or have a look at some other watches that aren't as good IMO...

Buy a Dreadnought Voyager from our host, put it on an orange Nato or an orange rubber strap. That should be plenty eyecatching.

Pilots watch with a bit of colour? Not too much you understand, don't want to get distracted whilst landing the old crate :)

Looks good on a nato, but bracelet is very good and very much sub £1000...

I picked up a Hamilton Pan Europ for well under a grand (£731 and 0% finance), its auto with clear caseback, has some heritage to it, colour, day/date feature, comes WITH a very, very! well made NATO too...

Now that is very nice, I do like the look of that. Good mixing of more retro theme with modern.

I'd say PRS-22 GMT would be a good choice. I've had the three hander and it's a serious bit of kit for the money.
Also, have a look at Sinn, also fantastic quality at that price point, (albeit 2nd hand). Seiko are hard to beat and if you want a colourful 'techie' watch (not an auto obviously), Google the Tissot SeaTouch.

Seiko MM300 or Omega SMP300 would be the wise second hand choice.

As has been mentioned, the world is your oyster.

Get yourself to Chrono24 and have a play there with the filters and brands — many you'll probably have never even heard of.

Id be looking around the same budget for myself as I'm a long way away from Rolex or Omega ownership.

Steinhart are the obvious choice. Torgoen have some on their site. They have a massive sale on at the moment but I'm not sure if all the automatics have gone.

I'm currently considering a steinhart GMT-ocean 1. Have a look at the Steinhart thread for more info.

or you could go Seiko, you can't go far wrong with one of them!

Or Longines, a well established Swiss brand with plenty of history, I've owned Omega and Longines Watches, and my Longines wasn't far behind my Omega in the quality department!

I know the OP cannot see SC, so perhaps it is worth pointing out what I did there, the bargain that is the TKMaxx offer on these glycine watches.
£250 is very cheap for what appears to be an Elaboree grade 2824-powered watch with Sapphire crystal and display back.

The only thing is that it has no colour whatsoever!!!

Thanks Dave. Would look good on a NATO.

I love that Hamilton watch too, thanks trainspanner

The Squale 1521 is interesting, has a spot of colour (on the hands, or the dial, depending on variant) and looks good on a NATO-style strap. It's sub-£1,000, automatic and (IMHO) a classic design.

If you're happy to go with the Grey Market, Iconic have the Pan Europ for £640.

I bought my Planet Ocean from Iconic and had no problems, others may have different experiences obviously though.

If you have a look on Chrono 24 there are a few Europe based sellers that have some very good prices on these Hamilton's. Particularly Plus Watches in Italy although I've never dealt with them so cannot give any personal insight. A review search will give you some idea though.
