Third time's a charm. Explorer II

This is the 3. time I have the Explorer 16570. The first one, a beautiful white dial example with the 3186 and parachrome balance. The second one a little earlier, but with a black dial and no drilled lugs. And finally this one. A 1994 model with original tritium hands/dial, that shows some beautiful patina. Not sure about this one yet either, but one can hope that there is something to the saying in my title. :-)

I also found a suitable period NG which promotes the Exp II and celebrates Erling Kagge and his singel handed expeditions to both the south and north poles. He has worn his Explorer II since then, and can often bee seen in norwegian media wearing his watch on an old flag coloured skistrap. :-)

    Great pictures!
I think the polar 16570 is probably my favourite in the Rolex lineup. It deserves to be more popular.

+1 .... great watches, which look even better when the lume starts to yellow .... suspect their lack of popularity is partly due to general upsizing by manufacturers - love mine, but it does look small when I pop it on after my SubC .....

A lot to be said for these.

The man on the street expects a Rolex to be in the style of a President or Sub/GMT or maybe Daytona. What I like about the ExpII polar is that it doesn't flash itself as Rolex to all and sundry but anyone that knows watches, knows the Exp I & II's.

    That's enough recognition for me.

Great pics... a Rolex i dont mind wearing anywhere seems a tuff little watch.

Here's my well-worn one from 1996 interesting that the dial pips seem to have aged differently from the hands (which are all original except the secondhand which was replaced [unasked] at service). Nicely creamy anyway .....

I loved the white Tritium dial Explorer that I owned , just that bit different and are so comfortable on the wrist and easy on the eye .

I know not a lot of love in comparison to subs etc in the watch world , but great VFM .

Not showing on my pictures, but the hands on my watch has a little less patina as well.

The Explorer II Polar always looks good on images, but live on the wrist it seems to dissapoint me. It's the same this time, not sure if it going out there again.

Here is an image of my first exp II, and as you can see it photographs well:

I never understood why these weren't as popular as other Rolex sports models, the 42mm model doesn't seem to have done any better either

They are indeed very nice watches. And the size is not an issue if you have small wrists like me.

    Cool

    Certainly is a charm!
Although i rarely wear mine, its certainly not going anywhere.
I find the smaller/ older size is more discrete and comfortable...for my baby wrists!

I had one last year but couldn't get on with the bracelet to be honest. Spoiled by Panerai and IWC bracelets it just felt cheap and rattly. Since the I've tried on it's big brother and been tempted, but just not quite enough.

A long term grail for me, and one that once I laid my hands on it lived up to expectations, a definite keeper!

This is the best homage for me, just different enough to be interesting. Still want one actually but it's very hard to find now.
