Podcasts - recommendations and where to find them

I have over the years listened to a few podcasts but never really truly got into them. Recently started looking again but I'm finding it really hard to find stuff that I like.
I have had a look at PodBean to try to source decent podcasts but the pickings are a bit slim. What would be good is a site like Spotify for podcasts that brings up recommendations.

So any good podcasts that you can recommend?

Anything goes, comedy, history, music, documentary, whatever. I greatly enjoyed 'The History of Oil' recently. A watch related podcast, 'The Grey Nato' is OK, even if they are Canadian and the language is a bit odd.

...and if you like fiction, and can still get it on iTunes, 'We're Alive' will take you awhile to finish and everyone I have recommended it to has enjoyed it.

One I've not seen mentioned is The Dollop - an American history podcast where one host reads a story from history to his friend, and they react to it. They're both comedians, and the podcast is very, very funny. There are a lot of back-episodes, but the language is fruity, so you won't be able to listen when the kids are in the car!

A bump for this as I always enjoy a good podcast! I've been enjoying Adam Buxton (based on the recommendation) and listened to pretty much all his podcasts... I am downloading the Dollop and will try that too plus the history of ww2

    Anyone found any good ones?

    A couple that I'd recommend...

Josie Long - shortcuts (it's a wonderful podcast, very well conceived and delivered)

Chain reaction - the interviewee turns into the interviewer I'm a continuous chain and it's had some great people on it

Times Red Box is great for relatively balanced political views.

The Smoking Tire is broadly car themed chat show and while utterly unstructured, if you like the personality of the presenter it's a really good way to waste time.

The Bottom Line is a good discussion on business hosted by Evan Davis.

Moral Maze from the BBC is good if you're in the mood for polarising discussion from passive a aggressive panel. Probably not what they'd like to have it advertised as.

    All on iTunes.

"Join Jim Clemente (former FBI profiler), Laura Richards (criminal behavioral analyst, former New Scotland Yard) and Lisa Zambetti (Casting director for CBS’ Criminal Minds) as they profile behavior from real criminal cases. I suppose the Meredith Kercher murder episodes were the most eye opening. I find the whole thing consistently good though.

Here's my podcast screen. Many have been mentioned before, but I'll take a minute to say

All Songs Considered is excellent, and is effectively a really good radio show where they play good new music. Very knowledgeable hosts, and I've picked up some great reccommendations from it.
Athletico Mince is hit and miss, but very funny when it hits. If you join in now, you might find if a bit odd, but it's ostensibly a football podcast by Bob Mortimer and his mate Andy. Lots of running gags, songs, absurd humour.
If you want somewhere to start with Hardcore History (it can be intimidating, as the episodes are very long) I recommend Ep 42, Logical Insanity, about the history of the bombing of civilians from the air. It's a great way in, and the four hours will fly by!
I only listen to The Mountain Goats is pretty damn niche, but I'm really looking forward to it. Made by the guy who makes Welcome To Nightvale, and is a song by song discussion of the MG output with John Darnielle himself. It's gonna be good.
In Our Time is wonderful and proper highbrow.
My Dad Wrote A Porno is very funny, and comes (f'narr) in small bursts (f'narr, f'narr). Probably a good idea to start near to the start, and get a handle on it. Reliably funny.
BBC Playtime - err, that's for the kids!
I used to listen to Revolutions religiously, and really enjoyed his history of the English, the French, the American and Haitian revolutions. Finding it hard to get enthusiastic about the latest series, mind.
Just started Under The Hood a page by page (!) analysis of Moore and Gibbons' Watchmen. Whether they can keep it up for the whole book is another matter.

Very honourable mention to S-Town, or Shit Town, or whatever it's called. Not on my list as I finished it, but a gripping, engrossing bit of journalism that's never really about what you think it's about. Wonderful.

Agree with that - just found it the other day and it’s cracking. Bit of passing horological interest featured in it, too.

Its sister shows, Serial (1 and 2) are also very deserving of their rep.

Most of my favourites are already mentioned above except for Jon Robson's the butterfly effect, http://www.jonronson.com/butterfly.html an excellent look into the origins of free streaming pr0n and following the consequences.

I second the Butterfly effect - interesting listening, as well as Serial and S-Town.

One that hasn't been mentioned (that I could see) is Kermode and Mayo film reviews - many laugh out loud moments as they review the weeks films (hello to Jason Isaacs)

Listening to The Wire Stripped at the moment - reviewing and discussing every episode of the wire - podcasts didn't get much attention/exist back when it was originally broadcast, so this is a bit nostalgic.

As a massive fan of The Wire I will have to have to give this a listen.

Have you tried Caught On The Wire podcast? It’s the same premise.

    Athletico mince is excellent.
Also the rugby pod with big Jim and Andy Goode.

Both are outwardly sport podcasts, but in truth have little to do with sport.

I love podcasts! My recommendations (aside from usuals like WTF, Serial and S-Town):

Presidential - simple concept, brilliantly executed - 1 episode per US President, detailing their time in office. All less than an hour each I think.

Crime Town - about Mayor Buddy Cianci, true story and a riotous one. From lawyer to Mayor, with some wise-guy chutzpah. A great listen!

Heavyweight - a series of podcasts where the host follows the story of a real, everyday person - usually tracing back through a moment that impacted their life. It is heart-breaking, hilarious, uplifting, depressing, and joyful.

FT Behind the Money - usually quite short, but detailed and fascinating stories from the world of business

You Must Remember This - if you love Hollywood, this is the one for you. I listened to the Charlie Manson series first and it is really a labour of love. The host goes back in time in Hollywood to explore the great characters, tragedies and triumphs in the kind of storytelling only a zealot can achieve.

Off Menu - with Ed Gamble and James Acaster inviting their guest of the week into their imaginary restaurant to select the dream starter, mains, side, dessert and drinks of choice, this never fails to make me laugh. POPPADOMS OR BREAD!?

Talking Politics - David Runciman and co, dissecting politics of the day - from the UK, to US, to Burma. Nobody does it better.

Stadio - a podcast mixing football and cultural debate, may not be for you - but I like it.

    Dear Joan and jericha.

If men recorded that podcast they would be locked up.

At points it's sublime, at others disgusting.

    Think female Derrick and Clive.

Off the menu is really good. Apart from the Mike Skinner episode which was toe curling. James was fanboying and Mike wasn’t having any of it. Infact he (MS) came across awfully.

    For me I’d recommend

    Tim Ferris
Peter attia ( spelling maybe off on that)
Seeing red (true crime not amazing but some interesting cases )
    Dr Uz
    The Leg it podcast
    James English
    Joe Rogan

And a few random ones mixed in here and there all depending on how much I’m driving as that’s when I listen I’ve gone right off radio for a while now.

I like The Rewatchables, where a few American film critics dissect what makes a film “re-watchable”!

It’s a different movie every episode
