Any advice on Free Anti Virus for PC... sounds like AVG has had its day!

Any advice on Free Anti Virus for PC?

I have a new (and cheap) laptop and have just finished the free McAfee trial that it came with. I was about to dutifully install AVG which i have done for the past decade but was stopped in my tracks by the reviews on cnet.com sounds like AVG has had its day and is now reliant on aggressive sales and pop-ups... users seem very unhappy indeed!

Any suggestions?

built in windows defender is enough on windows 10 if you're careful enough, use adblocker and have a bit of common sense.
generally don't click dodgy looking links.... I've never had any issues for last couple of years relying on windows defender.

I am a computer repair technician and I tend to install Avast, most of the free antivirus has knaggs these days.
I gave up on AVG over a year ago.

I had used Avast (free) for years on my laptops, but then found it kept turning itself off for some reason (virus?).

My new PC has Comodo on it which I find a bit invasive. Norton (paid for) is the worst I have EVER come across for pop ups etc and I would NEVER use it again as a result.

I mostly use a Chromebook Pixel so don't need to worry about virii (LOL).

However, on my Windows 10 laptop (still needed up update my TomTom etc) I have Kaspersky Internet Suite which is free for Barclays customers. Seems to do the trick, and has plug-ins to monitor incoming emails, websites, payment pages etc.

Dunno really, was just easier to install avg on them. Think the issue was, the free kaspersky is only for 2 devices, so didn't have enough to cover all the house androids, so just went with avg on them all instead.

As per above, on Windows 10 (not others!) Defender is perfectly sufficient; just use Malwarebytes and something like CCleaner (to check for registry issues and cleandown aspects of O/S) every month; no problems since release of Win 10 with this approach.

I've been using 360 Total Security without issue for a while on this PC, however I'm sure they are all much of a muchness. Your habits are key.
I cannot remember the last time any AV / malware program I have had picked up anything - Resist that urge to open the email from 'sexy neighbour girl'

but as usual... the best line of defense is the user being cautious about what they allow to run on their systems and don't fall for Phishing schemes, etc. so if your fairly good here, hopefully, if something does slip by, Windows Defender will catch it.


and as a general rule... don't have Java or Flash installed on your browser unless you must use them as just doing that gives one a decent boost to their overall system security and keep your programs up to date, especially your browser and chances are you will be fine.

my advice... avoid using smartphones for anything important online as they tend not to get security updates as quickly, or at all, unlike Windows/Linux desktop which gets security updates quickly, etc.


p.s. but I use Linux (Linux Mint v19.3) Linux Mint 19.3 “Tricia” Cinnamon released! – The Linux Mint Blog as my general day-to-day OS. so I don't run any anti-virus but instead use Firejail 20 (a sandbox program for Linux (I run the newest one on their SourceForge page)) to help ensure nothing shady gets onto one's system from browsing the web, especially if your occasionally on suspect websites, but even occasionally more legit websites get hit with drive-by downloads.

Firejail is just extra insurance for one's Home folder basically and it's easy enough for the average person to get it running on their browser and basically does not interfere with general use (although you're limited to saving files, by default, only to the 'Downloads' folder and when you run files you download, make sure to access them from your file browser and not from Firefox itself since it will be in the sandbox which we don't want). many say one does not need anti-virus for Linux systems which is why as a bonus, those who have underpowered CPU will benefit from an overall faster running system on Linux than they would with Windows since fewer CPU resources are wasted running unnecessary junk.

I've switched to Bitdefender Free based on several recent comparison tests.

I remember reading a year or two ago that Kaspersky was in trouble for its alleged siphoning of data to Putin...don't know what ever came of that.

I've used Avast! for years and am still happy with it (I run it in "silent mode" so it never nags me to upgrade). I also have Malwarebytes which I use for occasional scans (and my bank has recently been giving a free licence for the Premium version).

Mind you, I've read a number of reviews that say that the built-in Microsoft anti-virus is as good as any.

Depends how you look at it really. Mac OS is targeted differently to Windows.

Meghan is well-known on https://malwaretips.com/. If you are a 'normal' user who doesn't go to the badlands then Windows Defender will be fine. If you want something that stops the wicked stuff then go CFW. Bit of a learning curve but worth it. Her videos tell you how to set it up and demonstrate it in action.

I use Kubuntu on my laptop don't bother with an AV. On the windows PC's attached to TV's I just use WD as they are for streaming Netflix, etc.
