My vote goes to: Pingu.
This story made me laugh out loud when I heard it on the Today Programme this morning: http://www.theguardian.com/environme...are_btn_fb#_=_
Also love the 'Usain Boat' suggestion.
My vote goes to: Pingu.
Although, within the small print of the competition, they reserve the right to call the ship whatever they want!
Apparently a train guard renamed his train today on the displays etc.. as
"Trainy mctrainface"

I'll start: I bet it'll be called the David Attenborough. He deserves it: he's done more to educate us than anyone else around.
I heard about this story on Radio 2 earlier in the week and it made me laugh in hysterics :D
Heard it on R4 too... The guy who came up with it works for them and put it in as a bit of a joke and now, apparently, is feeling a little shame faced... Very funny!
Haha brilliant.
Reminds me of the whale called Mr Splashy Pants, where I believe Greenpeace didn't have the same disclaimer
The results are in...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36064659
RRS Boaty McBoatface - 124,109
RRS Poppy-Mai - 34,371
RRS Henry Worsley - 15,231
RRS It's Bloody Cold Here - 10,679
RRS David Attenborough - 10,284
The Australians aren't original but they do have a sense of humour...

Shouldn't that be 'Planey O'Planeface'?
Whilst I disagree with the lack of democracy around naming this vessel, at least common sense has prevailed in the end.
A very fitting tribute to one of the greatest (if not the greatest) naturalists, and all-round good eggs alive today.

I'm with you on that. I was watching him very recently on the Galapagos programme he did and he has always had the ability to present what could be relatively dry material in such an engaging, honest, easy and interesting way. His programmes would be nothing without the extraordinary teams that are involved, but he has a gift for sure.
We've had a laugh, probably what we do best nowadays apart from selling coffee or financial derivatives whatever they are,
But, I'm genuinely pleased. The right outcome I think.
In this instance, yes... the rules were laid out... it was put to the vote, and then when someone didn't like it, they decided to change the rules.
In the same way that Jedi is not regarded as an official religion in the UK, despite 370,000 people stating it in the 2001 census, thereby making it the 4th most popular answer. It's as plausible as any other answer, IMHO (but that's a whole other thread).
Not quite fair, I think. They just invited suggestions from the public; they never said that the top suggestion would automatically be chosen.
If people want more democratic digital engagement, but then send in lots of silly suggestions when engaged with, that makes me think perhaps they're not quite ready for more engagement.
Yes, they never said they would be bound.
The right result although I have a slight wistful regret that if we'd gone through with 'Boaty' it would have made a very firm statement about British humour and confidence in ourselves as a nation.
They've named one of the rovers Boaty McBoatface
I quite agree and guessed that they wouldn't name the ship after the poll winning name.
I think it's great that they're going to name one of the submarines boaty McBoatface though. :-)
Can I suggest they name the other submarine (there will be two) Subby McSubface!!?
to be fair sense won out here these online polls are mainly voted on by teenagers who are just looking for a laugh . would have been an embarrassment to name the ship that . fitting that david attenborough would have a research ship named after him

I was alluding to Subby McSubface as in submersible.. Anyway, Rovvy McRovface has a certain ring to it though and since all the cool names are already been taken ie Echo Voyager, Echo Chaser etc
or or it can be a posh boat - Boatty Attenborough-McBoatface :))
PS in any case enjoy..

Looks like the Swedes have a better sense of humour as they've gone ahead and made their Trainy McTrainface official....
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-swedish-train
"MTR Express said the McBoatface decision had led to disappointment worldwide and it hoped the name Trainy McTrainface would “be received with joy by many, not only in Sweden”.

Apparently they are autonomous rather than remotely operated:
...and they work: Boaty McBoatface sheds light on warming ocean abyss
The debut mission involving the autonomous submarine Autosub Long Range – affectionately known as Boaty McBoatface – has for the first time shed light on a key process linking increasing Antarctic winds to rising sea temperatures...
See also this link to Boaty McBoatface for some more background.
Good work boaty mcboatface, savingbthe oceans one experiment at a time, this is just hilarious they were allowed to name it this but it started a trend of funny train names and snow ploughs and all sorts
