Ah! That explains it! I always wondered why it was called a watch pocket.

I recall that the tiny pocket was originally designed for tobacco?

    from the Levis site

    The Watch Pocket
The first blue jeans had four pockets—only one in back and, in the front, two plus the small, watch pocket. Originally included as protection for pocket watches, thus the name, this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket, to name a few.

I've always used it for change because it means it won't scratch my phone in the main pocket

We used to call it a "Johnny" pocket after The Rubber Johnny nickname for condoms.

Brings to mind the old "Johnny Cash - change from a condom vending machine" chestnut.

In the 70's I kept my Ronson Varaflame Comet in there.

Fast forward 40+ years and it houses my Fitbit One.

Boring or just a sign of the times.

I always thought it was for emergencies on dodgy stag do's when you've a 50/50 chance of being robbed due to ending up in some backstreet ahem bar in Prague . . . . Apparently

Funnily enough that's what I still use mine for (cords, not jeans). I always put 50ps in a jar as part of the, not-so-secret, watch fund.

I've used a pocket watch in mine once or twice.... but normally its a great place to keep a swiss army knife

I also used to keep a small alcatel mobile phone in one (when small phones were the rage)

I find it good for modern car keys which of the last couple I've had fit perfectly.

For those of us who rely on reading glasses to examine menus and the like, a pair of these fits perfectly and unobtrusively:
