    I can do subtle....

My fondness for chunky watches sometimes relents..... Here's a little number from 1974.....

    Closer shot.

That looks remarkably modern in design for a watch from 1974. I could see that for sale as a modern design now. I like it.

    I love those Seikos.

By the way, could that be 1964? Big markers suggest 70s but overall design looks more 60s to me.

I'd love to think it was as old as 1964.... Might well add to its value! ;-)

Such a timeless design. I'm sure some smart watches will have an equivalent virtual dial.

My guess was going to be 1971 ish at earliest. What's the model number on the bottom of the dial?

That would be a very big watch for a 1964 Seiko

Yeah, it was sold as 1974 and the serial number says it's a year ending in 4. :-)

Also generally in early to mid sixties Seikos with a date I would expect to see something like "calendar" written on the dial eg

    (That's from 1963 and is 36.5mm)

There is a crown at the 3 position. It's just cleverly recessed into the case. :-)

1971. I've also got the same model in white. The gray is much nicer! The 7000 is just the same as the 7005 but manual and dateless. It cost me next to nothing on eBay, but its one of favourite watches.

The one imperfection: it too has a tiny crown, half-receded into the case - which makes winding it a pain in both senses

Its fascinating seeing how the dial fashion changes. Plain, clear and simple was once the order of the day but current gen is dominated by incredibly cluttered and complicated dials.

My subtle Seiko is slightly less subtle:

But more subtle than my Orange Monster...

And yet plain and simple like this is definitely in fashion on higher end dress watches. The 7000-movement Seiko from 1971 bears a strong resemblance in terms of its plain good looks to current Grand Seikos or some of the SARB range or similar.

Conversely, there were 1970s watches (most from later in the 70s I think) that had very bright and busy dials.

They can be purchased on eBay for £30-250, depending on condition. Yes, price vary widely.

1971 by the serial number. My father bought it in the Arabian gulf to celebrate getting his ticket. He wanted an Accutron but couldn't afford one.
He now has several accutrons, but he gave me the Seiko

Friend of mine got a 7005 in nice condition for just twenty quid on ebay. But then the listing said simply "mens watch" and the photo was so bad "Seiko" just about the only detail you could make out.

The cheaper models seem to tend to be chrome-plated.

A bargain indeed. Mine was much more but was presented very well and being sold by a collector. The key to ebay bargains is poor description and bad photos, no doubt.

Even just ploughing through "vintage Seiko" on ebay is exhausting enough. How people have the patience to trawl through the results that simply "watch" brings up, heaven knows!

Yes, they deserve a reward every now and then for such commitment ;-)

The number of vintage Seikos from India is staggering. Some look lovely but I'm wary.....

    Hi
Those particular Seiko models are getting quite scarce now as they are all being robbed for their hands which fit the 6105 (hr and mn) and the 62mas, nice to see one still all together

The simple dress watch is imo what Seiko does best

I do like their classic watches, like the Hi beat King Seiko (stolen picture)

However I think they are one of the last really good dive watch makers - not so expensive that you wouldn't dive in them, reliable and easy to read. That I think is Seikos forte.
