Reasons for designing and building myself are I like to be in control and not have to contact a faceless web designer when something goes to the wall or I need to make changes, I thought that if I learnt how to create a site then I will be able to maintain it better as I'll have knowledge of how to access and work each page. Another important point for me is it is very personal if the business owner has big input into their website and literature, after all it is you that will be liaising and doing the job and your personality will come across if you have enough input.

Also I feel a sense of achievement when someone comments on my website looking professional and ultimately generates my income as is responsible of how I pay the bills, at the time I didn't like it but a web designer copied my site design, colours and used copy virtually word for word, I hit him with copyscape - http://www.copyscape.com/ and few strong warnings and its now been toned away from my site.

Good luck with your own website and don't be frightened to have a go yourself and save your big budget
I haven't taken on any significant assignments yet because I'm a new designer. But, I am aware that there are product designers there who have spent years working to develop unique designs learn more here just for each client. They give excellent services with outstanding results and specialize in UI/UX design for startups.

Interesting discussion, my 2p of which is that £2-5k sounds very expensive for what you’re looking for, OP.

I have three websites, all of which I offer as examples of what can be achieved with little experience…

My professional website. This was built using html by a one man band around ten years ago, and the cost was less than £500; my designer taught me the basics of both html and CSS and I’ve maintained/updated the site myself regularly since then.

My photography website. Built entirely by me on the Squarespace platform and a doddle to maintain/update, which I do very regularly.

    https://tonyangelimages.com/

My watch website. Again, built entirely by me on the Wordpress platform equally simple to maintain/update, which I do very regularly.

My advice would be to think carefully before throwing thousands at this. And don’t over-engineer the solution.

Who is this comment aimed at? The thread is 7 years old so OP is probably sorted by now!

Ah, I hadn't realised since it was the top of my new posts list.

I thought you were running a radio station for a minute there Tony. I got an image of Smashy and Nicey in my head now and I’m humming You Ain’t seen nothing yet!

It was informative, given that it's a live thread again. Why delete it, if you don't mind me asking?

I noticed after I posted that it was an old thread. Felt a bit silly posting. On reflection I should have left it up there!

I'll re-post. I built my own wordpress websites following the instructions found at : https://tyler.com/ I found the process quite straightforward and fun. It's saved me quite a lot of money and I can update the sites very easily. I honestly prefer them to the sites I used to pay a professional to build. Please PM if you'd like to check them out.
