    Not Everyones Cup Of Tea...

EDIT: Added a few first impressions and an explanation of functionality - see post 61

Today has been a good one.

As many will know, I’ve been flogging off most of my watches with the aim of buying ‘the one’. I’d like to give thanks a few of the regulars for helping me with my sales and both the choosing the sourcing of my new watch, namely Tony (learningtofly), Kerry (100thmonkey), Alex (Alexaff), Andy Tims and MarcJ. This really is a community and I have real mates - thanks lads.

    So, why one watch?

No, it’s not a milestone, nor any sentimental period of my life, I just decided I wasn’t happy with the hobby in general and I was in fact stressing when choosing which watch of a collection to wear, so wanted to take the option away, but which watch would fill that role?

Criteria was it should be 40mm or less, black dial, must have a date, leather strap, discrete, fairly light and under £5k...

    Well, that didn’t work

Well, if you can only have one watch, it has to bring a smile to your face and for me, that smile is in the form of the Rolex Yachtmaster II - 116680 in steel.

Anyone who really knows me will attest to the fact this watch is me to a tee. I’m happy and as well as losing much weight, I’ve made a decision to visit the forum less and get on with life outside of this bubble. Don’t be saying any tearful goodbyes, I’ll be here, just a bit less come next week.

For anyone new, enjoy this place, it really is special. You’ll get members like me, who will rip the p*ss, but there is very little venom on here - we are just sometimes overly protective.

Eddie, hope 2016 brings you and the family good health. Cheers ears!

PS: I can’t bring myself to remove the stickers - how non-wis is that - I’m cured!

PPS: I do have one of Carls 6B watches too, which will be used in those rough and tough circumstances, but I intend to wear the YMII daily.

Wear in good health and as there is more to life than just watch forums, enjoy life in 2016. I'll be following in your footsteps soon regarding 1 watch and less TZ. Enjoy!

    That is a cracker,

It may be too early to say but a watch for all occasions or is that even relevant?

    Steve,

Good lump, doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Have you worked out how to set the countdown yet?

Nice watch, not my cup of tea but enjoy,! We have ever crossed swords but I do enjoy your posts and I am sure you won't be able to stay away for long. I will also be impressed if you stay a one watch man in the long term, plenty of us I am sure have thought and said it, but this hobby is an incurable disease!

    Lol

A brave choice, and I'm glad you sorted it quite quickly - I thought the Cartier would have lasted, but possibly a little tame in comparison to the YMII.
It's just a matter of time...

Countdown timer so much more useful in the kitchen than a chrono

Now this is a proper watch, bravo that man. First I think on this board too, and one I've been admiring (but not had a chance to buy yet) since they were announced at Basel. Even saw one in the window of Fraser Hart in Kingston today.

Be interested to here how you get on either the size etc. I've read that setting the regatta timing mechanism is a little tricky.

Whilst I can relate to the sentiment, I doubt you are fully cured. Good luck with it all though and that is a lovely watch to be getting on with.

    Great choice.
Am glad your choice of this watch got a kinder reception than when I posted mine😄😄
I happen to like this one a lot.
    Have a wonderful year ahead.
Will be sad to see you posting less and will miss your no-nonsense approach.

Nice, mate, and as you say - you to a tee. Mind you, I had a funny feeling you'd end up with a PAM 233, so it just goes to show...

My occasions, I think so. I have the 6B for when I’m on the bike.

Already used it and agree. The timer is so visible, it beats the likes of the Daytona hands down in that department.

    YouTube has been my friend.

Really simple and when you start to play with it, the functionality of a ‘connected bezel with memory’ is amazing. It not only operates as a fly-back, but as a fly-forward - if you are past 30 seconds in any minute, pressing the reset button puts you on the next minute - amazing.

Enjoyed the 243 a lot, but I really do need a bracelet.

Was in good company today. The Pam and Emergency owned by non-wis mates, but each was once mine...

Looking in the AD yesterday, and this watch was at the top of the tree. You can see why. Don't stay away for long Burnsey.

Oh and how long is it before I can view SC?

Interesting choice Steve, but I totally get where you are coming from in making it. I've been, (pretty much) a one watch man for a while now and whilst I occasionally miss certain watches that have gone to pastures new overall I'm a happy man. New daughters also seem to take up an inordinate amount of time anyway!

Best of luck for 2016, don't change and don't do another flounce...

Funny how a watch which was not warmly received has actually aged well... Steel is the natural material for it, it should have been the original release!

Love it mate, enjoy and don't be a stranger!

    Nice watch mate!
I was very unsure (to say the least) when I saw the pics and the catalogue, But living in one of the sailing centres of the uk, I have seen many of these being worn and they look very nice indeed in "real life"
I can honestly say that I don't know of another watch that looks so different when worn, compared to the photos, hope you enjoy it, and don't stay away too long.

    Love this watch

It is on my short list. The functionality is so cool with the bezel working with the movement and the thirty second thingy you mentioned.

    Enjoy :)

Glad you still have the GGB watch. I really enjoyed your thread on its production.

The YMII is not to my tastes but no one can say it is not a stunning piece.

i really like that and have always thought it was quite a departure for the Rolex designers. i dont think it is that easy to make an interesting watch in a conventional shape but that does a great job of looking un usual without the requirement for giant appendages and odd case profile shapes.

  42. #42
If you're only to have one watch it needs to be special and (as you said) bring a smile to your face. Enjoy!

The perfect dial was accidentally damaged in transit and unfortunately that was the end of that.

Would have a minty original in a heartbeat, as a one watch man or not, but they're getting so, so difficult to find.

Brilliant Steve... always good to see one of the good people on here achieve what they want. I took a bit of a break for a while on here. Sounds daft but it did me good. Now I love watches again and of course, the community of TZ is still very strong; some truly fantastic members on here.

Have a great 2016 with your lovely new watch.

Good choice and well done for whittling down the collection, I'd love to do the same but doubt that will happen for 20 years yet when I no longer will 'need' to put any thought into what watches to have for work / weekends / smart etc.
