Love the omega 8)
That’s a lovely watch. I’m fascinated by historical inscriptions and connections. Do you know much about the history of the watch? Gresh I guess could be Gresham. There are a few British Army units with 5th in their name. The 60 is intriguing.
If I’ve understood the hallmarks correctly, the case is silver, imported through Edinburgh (the ‘X’) in 1927 (the ‘W’). Would that match what you know?
Thank you for the kind words. I bought the watch at an antiques fair in Matlock.
My research has come up with the same findings as yourself re the case. The SP stamp I'm presuming is a makers mark, but I can't find any examples that matches the letters SP with that font in that shape. The 60 is indeed intriguing, I wondered if it was a birthday or some other anniversary at first, however, it's stamped at the same depth as what I believe to be the makers mark which is deeper than the rest of the inscriptions and in a different font.
I've tried to search Army records but with no real success. I did also wonder about the Scouts as there are many 5th's groups - but no mechanism to search that organisation.
It certainly would be interesting to find out who he was.
The Swiss movement is 15 jewel and adjusted to 3 positions
