    OK Mayer is cool.
And he has good taste in Daytonas.

Such is life among the lemmings.
It was a lovely watch before, it’s a lovely watch now.
Apparently since then the green dial Daytona’s have also become very hard to get following his endorsement. Years ago I saw him being interviewed about his watches and he clearly loves them but what a load of old tripe people listening to his personal opinions and then being desperate for one, hoping it will be the next big riser in value. Whatever happened to people buying watches that they liked eh?

His personal taste is of no consequence to anyone, but there's nothing wrong with trying to identify where the market will go.
He clearly has a lot of experience and knowledge of Rolex, because he has had an interest in them for many years.
Yellow/green daytonas seem to be off the charts at £40k++ now. The WG/Blue hasn't gone the same way.
Perhaps the global market has more interest in the more "indiscreet" YG model than the UK. Think Asia/India etc....

I won't be too upset if the WG/blue prices go the same way. But I'm fairly confident they won't drop much anyway.

In any event, given the volumes of both models that must be sold each year are probably exceedingly low, even a fairly small change in demand probably has quite a big impact.

I think the WG/blue is up there with any Rolex of any era in terms of looks and quality, so value increase will only be extra upside!

You can still order the WG/blue dial model; it’s current. Mine took four months. Possibly the nicest watch in the entire catalogue. It avoids the ‘showiness’ to which some models are prone. I sold it to get a white gold DD40. Probably a poor decision , but there you are. Although the bezel marks easily, you can get a replacement come service time if you care enough. I believe the metal bezels will be more in demand long-term than ceramic . Probably!
Because the prices of the steel ceramics have lost all contact with reality, the better gold versions become more tempting. They feel so much more ‘special’ on the wrist. And used, they only cost a few grand more.

Pulled this out of the safe for a wind and wear today. Reminded me that the 4030 is really very different to the 4130.

To me those pics just say that it would look best on an all-brushed Oyster.

I was very fortunate to score this rather lovely Air King Date from 1981 at a reasonable £950. No box or papers but that is to be expected and it just needs a service.

    A classic.

Thanks for the compliments and it's always been a favourite of mine over the years even if for some, 34mm is a little small, it suits my wrist just fine. I love the silver stick dial and the understated appeal of it. A three handed watch that simply tells you the time and the date. Perfect.

The Oyster is mine, the jubilee a colleagues.

Side by side the lugs look a little more tapered on the new model but it’s really marginal.

Good call there you can see the waisted effect. I wonder if they will do that on the 2020 Basel Sub release?

Here’s VDB with Rolex 745 movement. Also my old GMT.

    In a Tantalum Case...

GMT and early one with that very delicate Bakelite bezel insert!

Picked up my Sub Date last Friday but decided to wear my DJ41 as it's sunny and the blue dial is just so gorgeous in the sun.
