Horrid!
This came in to me today :
It purports, of course, to be a model 116598-RBOW......but look more closely.
Those sub-dials should be genuine "gold crystal," to use Rolex's terminology, rather than simply mottled with camouflage gold to replicate the effect. The bezel isn't looking too clever, either....
It is in fact a simple 116528 that left Geneva with a plain gold bezel and has subsequently been fitted with parts that lack one vital thing : any time spent in a Rolex factory!
I must say that some nice work has gone into elements of the dial, but why do this to such a fine watch? It's like winning a date with the Duchess of Cambridge and asking her to wear a Katie Price mask for the evening.

Horrid!
In all honesty, authentic or not, duchess or porn star, to the majority that's a minger - Im not talking about the quality or authenticity - just the style...
... if you could only get watches like this in Turkey, or aftermarket, then that might soften the blow somewhat, but rolex actually make stuff like that for real and people buy it..!
Still, the human equivalent - Rod Stewart - has done rather well for himself.
Different tastes mate. I am pleased to say I dont share yours and would happily wear a rainbow if i could find one but Rolex pulled production pretty soon after release due to issues sourcing stones.
Oooer that's a bit out there for me, just goes to prove money doesn't always buy good taste
What a awfull looking watch, the best place for that is the breakers yard, and never to be seen again.
Hmm, different strokes I guess. Haywood, I congratulate you on being able to view it closely enough for long enough to determine its lack of authenticity.
My reaction may not be as extreme as some, although it's along the same lines as many - this is the sort of watch which causes me to thank the deity of my choice that I was not gifted with exceptional footballing skills, if you get my drift.
@ fmc000 : Absolutely, but the baddies would have no difficulty adding red hands and setting diamonds into the lugs to take this a step closer to the real thing. Better attempts are also being made to remove original case numbers and re-apply those that would correlate with the genuine model.
@ dickbrowne : Footballer comment......understood and agree!
The wider discussion about taste is an insoluble one that I don't see much point perpetuating. I posted the watch more because I found technically that the non-Rolex parts were of interest and it is not a permutation that many would seek to doctor their £23,200 basic model to imitate.
I took the watch in, but allowing for the cost of a Rolex service, a new gold bezel and the fitting of one of my spare dials. That's a significant four figure sum.

By chance I have just come off the phone to a Rolex main agent, to whom I mentioned this watch.
He said that he spoke with one of the Rolex gem-setters about the genuine Rainbow Daytona (while on an AD trip to Geneva, one imagines). The setter informed him that the model was so expensive because the attrition rate during production was astounding : they would break seven out of every ten baguette cut stones before they could be successfully fitted into the bezel.

I think most people are missing the point of the post.
Rainbow Daytona is not everybody's cuppa. We have established that long time ago.
The post is not about the looks of the Rainbow but an after market mod of a genuine Daytona to make it look a Rainbow Daytona.
The mod, i dont like.. but id happily wear a rainbow daytona.. just not every day.
I wanted them gem-setting watch bezels when I was a guest at Chopard. They didn't break anything, but were only using vari-coloured sapphires or diamonds.
Problem with the Rainbow models is they have emeralds in there, and we all know our beryllium silicates don't take anything like the abuse our corundums will...
How could anyone think that looks good? A waste of metal and stones!
I'm imagining a situation similar to Paul Hogan's knife in Crocodile Dundee. A friend of mine showing me his new DSSD proudly then I lift my shirt cuff - no mate, That's a Rolex 😉
I fear I didn't make myself clear. My point was that the original owner possibly wanted a watch like the 98 but without the diamonds on the lugs, therefore he or she went for the mods.
Yup, this should make people aware than mods will cost them twice: for making them, of course, and for rolling them back when selling.
I love the original - but then Id wear a Daytona SACO if I had one ;)
It's just a matter of time...
I’ve seen one of these in Hong Kong and whilst it’s not my cup of tea, as a piece of jewellery that also tells the time it is lovely.

Ignorance breeds Fear. Fear breeds Hatred. Hatred breeds Ignorance. Break the chain.
not for me but each to his own, cant be the worst you've seen.
I'd love the Platinum too - but I can buy that cheaper than a new SACO version.
