Tag Heuer autavia refinish by esteemed forum member WalkerWek1958

I purchased this a few months ago from a member in Czech Republic. It was described as good condition, which it was but not "excellent" with quite a few nicks, nibbles and marks. What got to me though was lhd loss of the sun/starburst finish....
Bought that for £1400, Which was fair for a good condition watch, with an extra strap and tag buckle too....

    I wish I took better/more pics but I don't think I did...

Anyway after wearing it for a few months I approached Paul Walker and asked him about a refinish.

Whilst He said he didn't have the lapping machine required to mechanically refinish the case, Paul said he could refinish by hand to a good standard, and give the bracelet a going over plus attend to the polished sections of the case as required.

I duly packed and posted the watch over to Paul and upon receipt and testing he gave me some bad news. Thine keeping which seemed fine to me was way off. I rarely wear a watch two days consecutively as I like to change frequently but this means I don't always spot if a watch is losing/gaining time....

So the refinish has now become a service and refinish, but having said that a fully refinished and services watch will give me more joy than just having it refinished.

Paul let me have some pics of it stripped.

He did the refinishing and replaced some bits and tested for a week, returning it yesterday!

I'll let the pics do the talking, and suffice to say I'm over the moon!!!

Paul's hand applied sunburst finish is far far better than he said it would be, a classic case of under promise/overdeliver

Paul did a splendid job on my Omega SMP a while back - a fiddly crown tube repair and very fine refinishing of the case and bracelet clasp.

A great job. Over all the years I have been interested in watches and timepieces I have never, to my shame, considered a Heuer Autavia. Until recently that is as I have been looking at them more and more and trying to figure which models I might want to own. Thanks for the posting and congratulations all round.

Amazing to get that consistency of finish, by hand?
    That is skill/voodoo.
    Great watch.

The edge of a coarse Garryflex block and a steady hand are the prerequisites to refinishing starburst grained finishes. The bezel and glass must be removed, otherwise it'll end in tears!

The hard work is removing all the damage prior to refinishing; like decorating or painting cars the preparation takes longest, it has to be done thoroughly and it's time-consuming.

If anyone's serious about trying their hand at refinishing watches I`m happy to advise. The principles are simple enough and it gets far easier with practice.

This watch is an example of what TAG do best in my opinion, a bit big for my liking but the quality is excellent.

Wearing for work today, foible-button cuff has to be unfastened due to thickness....

Second pic really shows IMHO the sunburst "lines"

    Lovely!

I agree that Paul does a great job. I sent him a Tag 2000 Classic at the start of the year for a service and it's timekeeping has been amazing. Over the last 18 days it's averaging +0.3spd. Not bad for a simple non-cosc ETA!

That is some really nice result Paul. How do you refinish them with the Garryflex, do you simply follow the previous finish and press the edge of the foam to the metal? I would love to see it "behind the scenes" if you have the time.

If I had only seen the 'after' pics, I would have assumed it was a brand new watch. That's some seriously impressive skill. Given Paul's reputation it's no surprise, but he fully deserves the plaudits for this work.
