It took me a whole night to go from mulling to ordering :D

Only one way to know how you feel about it and that is to order one and wear it a couple of weeks then decide whether to return or not I guess. For me I knew I'd be keeping it after today which is the first day I've taken it out in the open on a clear and relatively bright day.

If it helps, the H-50 movement on this is rather great too. I can hear it ticking from 4 feet away in a quiet room and when winding it, the noise is quite satisfying

I see it as a means to share an experience lol. Big reviewers don't seem to focus on the smaller details like how the winding sounds or how the crystal plays with distortion and light and how clear it is to see the dial, stuff like that.

Have to say though the Hamilton NATO straps don't do it for me, hence the Bonetto Cinturiri rubber from ZuluDiver.

  4. #2954
I generally frown upon those modified (to me: downgraded) ETAs but the movement wasn't a showstopper for me in this case, the crystal was. When I buy a modern watch above a certain price point, I want a sapphire in it, and not the 'look at the beautiful distortion' wool over my eyes.

That said, when I tried this Hammy on a year or two ago, I only knew the crystal was mineral because the attendant reminded me of it, if I remember correctly.

I suspect this may be the answer to many recent questions about the quality of 'new' watches in the sales

    Almost certainly you are correct!

Personally I woild not call it a downgrade, nothing about the movement has been compromised by Hamilton and there's lots of info out there on this H-50 on how they went about it, it's also on other models and as of yet I've not heard of any issues!

Accuracy wise their regulation is certainly on point as most people are getting around +3s a day and mine currently sits at:

I initially thought the same when I was mulling over buying it or not. It's a lot of money to pay for an otherwise superb quality vintage re-issue but not get modern crystal considering everything else on the inside is modernised and specced really well. Plus the fact that all of my other analogue watches have sapphire!

But now that I have it and can see how in different light how clear this mineral is which lead me down the search path online and I realised there are different grades of mineral crystal by different brands. Hardlex from Seiko being one offering more scratch resistance. Hamilton make no mention on what type of mineral crystal is used here and I won't be putting scratch resistance to the test of course but at this price I'd at least hope it's of a higher grade mineral than say a £100 beater watch. Worth noting that mineral is also less reflective than bare sapphire crystal.

Here's how it looks moving around the dial in dim indoor lighting:

It certainly looks and feels really good and without being told, I'd have never guessed it was mineral and thought it was sapphire based on just how it looks in various lighting conditions.
I love this watch. Had it for a month or so during summer. Didn’t get on with the size in the end being over 8 inch wrist. Looks great on you.
Also, I live just by that spiky thing in your picture :-)

Well, there are three main reasons why I see it as a downgrade:
    - I'll take 4Hz over 80h PR any day of the week (I know it's 100% preferential but the primary reason for me, nevertheless)
    - true, all in all, I think I've read more praises than complaints about the factory regulation, but in case you're unlucky, re-adjustment is a hassle
    - the plastic escapement

There's an interesting discussion on the subject on WUS (clicky).

That doesn't change the fact that your Hammy is lovely, wear it in good health!

    Small world :)

Yeah I can understand your reservations due to the size if you've got bigger wrists. I have a Casio F-91W that I rarely wear even though my nostalgia kicks in every time and I want to wear it but at some 33mm and crazy slimness it's just too small even for my wrists! Which is why I bought the Casio W-86 instead which is a chunkier modern F-91W in all senses and that looks much better to me on the wrist.

That's fair, long thread there too but initial posts seem to be undecided on silicon vs standard escapement? I've not read the whole thread yet of course as still reading.

On the whole I have only ever had one movement which was beyond what I would prefer in terms of accuracy. The Halios Tropik SS. It used the Miyota 9015 and my watch was one of the early releases. It was around -15s a day which was just out of range on Miyota's official spec of -10 to +30s a day so I didn't hang on to that watch long lol even though it was stunning:

I have to say though, since then all of the autos and hand crankers I have owned have all been within -5 to +10 with a relative average of +2 to +5s a day. These have all been from ETA (2824-2 top grade on Pelagos, Longines HydroConquest), Miyota (8N33, 9039, 8315), Seiko NH35, NOMOS Epsilon, Hamilton H-50. Hell even the Orient Mako and Bambino watches I had were within this range too.

Maybe I have been lucky but all of the main/micro brands I've owned in recent years regulate and adjust to at least 4 positions and I guess that's where the accuracy numbers I've been seeing result from.

The dial on that Panerai look's fantastic. The tree makes it look like a void in space
